This is a terrific compilation of hot jazz tracks from the 1920s, including a number I have never heard before. The sound has been cleaned but is still very clear and balanced. A great addition to your collection.

(A word of warning: the first track is the exception to the above praise. Its sound quality is poor, as indeed is the performance itself. Also, this CD is exceptional in the output of publisher ABM (Audio Books & Music). The majority of their CDs of old jazz are of very poor sound quality.)

The GREATEST Christmas cd of all time!!!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-19
This is truly the ONLY Christmas cd I can listen to all the way thru, over & over again. Think of Bing Crosby singing classic Christmas songs only backed by a hot 1930's style jazz combo, and he sounds like he's had a bit too much eggnog, and you have Leon Redbone, actually he sounds a lot more like the forgotten Crooner Red McKenzie, and his back up groups sound like Chick Bullock's Levee Loungers. Anyhow this is a classic jazz/vaudeville style christmas album. If you've already worn out all your Crosby Christmas cd's, and you'd like something in a similar vein, only a little more peppy and yet even more laid back at the same time, give this a try. Redbone's appealing baritone is a throwback to the forgotten crooners of the 20's(Red McKenzie, Chick Bullock...), and his guitar playing is in the Eddie Lang tradition, his backup groups are generally jazz greats(Joe Venuti, usually makes an appearance on his cd's). On this cd are timeless standards as well as forgotten gems such as Christmas Island. Among the favorites are White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, and Toyland(a song about a fantasy for a child, a land of toys). This is a TRUE Christmas/Vaudeville/trad jazz/Crosby-esque classic by the amazing Leon Redbone, once you get this you'll also want to explore hsi other cd's like Suger, and others. FUN & eseential music for an intimate romantic Christmas eve, or a swingin Christmas party. 10 STARS!!!

I am a natural christmas music lover but this is my favorite christmas album of all time. I look forward to listening to it each year. I happened across this album one day a few years back and was amazed to realize that this was the artist that my parents used to listen to on vinyl when I was 4 or 5. I had remembered his voice all these years but never knew who he was! I do now though and I am glad to see there is still a good selection of Redbone tunes out there. Get this album-you won't regret it!

Having some fun!

Just listen to Leon and Dr. John on "Frosty The Snowman" and you just know this is going to be fun. With his distinctive voice and with instruments like the dobro and accordian in the background, Leon has prepared a pleasant addition for any Christmas collection. "Try to listen to "There's No Place Like Home For The Holidays" without smiling, if you can, you probably don't like Leon Redbone or Christmas music to begin with. Docked a star for brevity (29:41 is short for an LP!) and the dippy "Toyland" (What is this about anyway?) this CD is a keeper.

For my money, this is the best Christmas album of all time that doesn't have Bing in it. Just Dr. John's piano solos are worth the price of admission. Then add Leon's timeless, groaning vocalizing (puts you somewhere between the Mississippi Delta and some lazy tropical island -- Christmas island?), the nicely sparse arrangements, and the great song selection (not a dud in the bunch), and you're talking Christmas Nirvana!

The only way to really get me in the mood for Christmas is to listen to this cd. Leon has a great voice and the renditions on this cd are great. Really fun, upbeat songs like Christmas Island, Let it Snow and Frosty the Snowman. The last song, Kitty Cats' Christmas, I could do without, but the rest of the cd I absolutely adore.

As a kid when my dad put this tape on, I dreaded it, because it wasnt for kids - my favorite was Alvin and the Chipmunks, obviously! Now that I'm older, I am so glad I found the cd version! It reminds me of christmas at my house, with the decorations and fireplace, everything. Very nostalgic for me. This 'Frosty the Snowman' is the best version I have ever heard.

This is music from another place and time--
probably recorded in the 1940s or 50s.
Beautifully played Jewish music by an obscure
musician. The sound quality is not so great,
but the music certainly is.
Emil Bruh was a very accomplished musician, with a
classical background (I'd guess) and he has great control over
the violin. The music ranges from deeply felt melodies to
music with more of an "entertainment" value.
Its "traditional" but not what I'd call "folkloric"
(if that makes any sense...)
Some of it sounds close to Gypsy music.
Highly Recommended.
