I am a classical trumpet player who was considering playing jazz. Once I heard this CD, I was hooked. Arturo has inspired me to add Jazz to my repertoire. His range is the largest I've ever heard. At the end of "A Night in Tunisia," Arturo has a dual with an electric guitar (and wins). He goes up and beyond anything I imagined possible with the trumpet, as well as low. The very last not that he plays in "A Night in Tunisia" is so low that it sounds more like an electric bass than a trumpet. While he does have the bright tone of a Jazz player, Arturo also has a rich dark sound in "Maria." I don't think I've ever heard a song with more feeling put into than when Arturo plays "Maria." He simply breaks the physics of trumpet playing.

If you saw his movie (For Love Or Country-great movie) and you like jazz music with an awesome trumpet player than you will love this C.D. There is very little vocal, instead the trumpet is the lead singer. There are many other outstanding musicians and instruments that make this a great C.D. I bought the soundtrack from Love Or Country and was very dissapointed, but this C.D. more than made up for it. If you want more big band jazz/trumpet music than my second recommendation would be Cubanismo by Jesus Alemany

What a guy

Simply put, Arturo Sandoval is one of the most amazing musicians of our time. This CD puts together some of his best work, although several tracks lack the Cuban "essence" that go with most of his songs. It is truly outstanding none the less. During Sandovals' cadenza on "A Night in Tunisia", you can hear someone in the audience yell out "Damn!" after one of his famed high notes... well put. This is one CD that's absolutely worth buying.

Totally outstanding!

This is one of the top jazz trumpets I have ever heard! Sandoval's technial ability and his range just topples me! He is much better than Maynard Feguson, I believe Sandoval has an octave above Ferguson. You can really hear his ability in the song A Night in Tunisia. Sandoval takes one lick and plays it i 3 DIFFERENT OCTAVES!!! His skill is beyond anything else i have ever heard. I hope to see him live soon.

I got this cd simply becaue Vinnie Colaiuta is playing on it. The best surprise was the rest of the musicians and the treatment of each one of the songs. The playing is tops. If you want to hear jazz played well, buy this disc. If you are a drummer, listen to the master and he, once again, applies his tradmark 'Vinnie stuff' with the other great talents. Randy Waldman is an unsung player. Listen for yourself.

Excellent jazz for people with "big ears" and an open mind

"Wigged Out" is not cocktail music but an interesting mix of excellent arrangements and outstanding musicians. This album is for people who have spent a great deal of time listening to Jazz and who have a trained ear. Some of the arrangements are silly but this doesn't take away from the high level of performing. Highly Recommended

"Wigged Out" is the most original and interesting jazz CD I have ever had the pleasure to hear. The performances by the artists involved were amazing, as were the flawless arrangements. It is a must-have collection of virtuoso performances, especially the piano solos by Randy Waldman and drum solos by Vinnie Colaiuta. Brilliant CD!

Don't Miss This One!!!

I have known and worked with Randy over a period of many years and his genius on the piano and wonderful arrangements never cease to amaze me. His new CD "Wigged Out" is a fine example of his great work. To sit with Randy and watch him effortlessly play and compose his material is a real treat. Sometimes he'll tell you jokes while playing "Flight Of The Bumble Bee" and not miss a note....and that's while he's playing trumpet. Seriously, you can experience his talents with just one listen to this brilliant CD.....but you'll want to listen again and again......so you'll have to buy it!

the previous writer was mistaken, the artunian trupet concerto was written by alexander artunian for a russian classical trumpet player decades before arturo sandOval ever performed on the trumpet. His classical playing is good but still secondary. Compared to a true classical artists his technique is rather sloppy at times. His multiple tonguing is blatty. His range and felxibility is impressive, but the overal consistency of his tone is ruined by his poor articulations. One area of classical trumpet playing arturo is up to par in is piccolo playing. If you wish to hear arturo play calssical, buy some of his picc recordings.

Diversity At Its Best

In this astonishing album, you will be awestruck by the technical and stylistic mastery Arturo Sandaval demonstrates. In the first two trumpet concertos, Mr. Sandaval, most notably known and revered for his latin music, shows off his diversity. He plays Beethoven and Hummel softly and sweetly, demonstrating a profound appreciation for classical music. The first two concertos inspire the listener through deep musicality.

The third and last concerto on the album, the Arutunian concerto, was composed by Mr. Sandaval himself. This piece is less traditional with respect to classical composition, but sets new boundaries for trumpet playing. Mr. Sandaval shows off technical versatility, quickly playing arpeggios as low as a bass trombone up to the highest of audible pitches, all in perfect tune. He shows off mastery of tonguing in a rapid-fire solo where he moves from octave to octave without missing a note. Mr. Sandaval has produced a phenomenal work by both writing and playing that which no other player or composer would have ever dreamed possible.

For any brass aficionado hearing this rare album is a must!

It's no secret that Arturo is one of the best trumpet technicians there is. He has unbelievable technique, a great sound, great range, and he's also an exciting player period. His first classical outing has some moments of greatness that most orchestral players would probably envy, however, there are also some bad moments on this album. Arturo easily has the technique to play through these pieces, which he handles as if they were child's play. However, his interpretation is off in certain places. Arturo plays with the Russian classical style, largely because he studied with a Russian teacher in his younger days (or so I'm assuming). That works pretty well for him on the "Arutuinian Concerto", which was written by Armenian composer Alexander Arutuinian. While Arturo's is not quite as good as Sergei Nakariakov's or Timofey Doksheizer's (which is nothing no feel ashamed of), his articulation is accurate and his sound stays good throughout. He also plays very well on the Leopold Mozart Concerto For Trumpet in D. He plays it very smoothly and sounds very effortless. This is a great piece also. His Hummel recording is fine until he gets to the third movement. He played it so loud! I love Arturo, but someone should've told him this isn't merengue, it's Hummel. He adds the latin flavor brilliantly in the second movement which was very passionate and romantic as it should sound. Also, his cadenza on the first movement knocked me out, and he played the first movement pretty well. His last piece is pretty bad, however. It's not a great composition, and sounds pretty shlocky. Arturo tried to go into new ground, and it didn't really work at all.

Overall, it's not Arturo's best work. His classical playing improved a lot more on the Trumpet Evolution album. It was more tasteful. Arturo should have played more tastefully on some of the movements. Other than that, he did pretty well, and it's not fair to knock him completely for this album, because overall it's not bad, it just has some bad parts.

I wish Amazon had a half star rating ability, because my overall rating of this album = 3.5 stars.

Just gettin' in on the fun...

I bought this CD when it came out in 1994 and when I got it home, I thought it stunk.

11 years later, I still think it stinks but I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. It's reminiscent of the late Al Hirt tackling the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the Boston Pops. Bold, yet a bit unrefined. Colourful, yet really, really ugly.

Recording quality: good

Repertoire: fair

Performance: bad

This was a sad atempt to introduce Mr. Sandoval to the roll of classical trumpet players. He is indeed a master technician of the instrument but has no understanding of interpretation in Baroque and Classical periods.

All the concertos (except his own) are totaly out of the right dinamics, tonguing, articulations, slurs, and vibrato. This last item (the vibrato) plays an important role in ones interpretation. Mr. Sandoval uses it as he was playing popular Cuban music. His articulation and tonguing are extremely heavy, giving the pieces a too much marcial style rather than a delicate solo part. There are too many bad things in this recording, but I won't list all of them.

This album should go togheter with his Trumpet Method, which is another unsucessful atempt.

I would not recommend this recording to anyone seriously interested in trumpet playing. This CD is surely for fans only.

I purchased this album because I was a fan of Arturo's jazz music. I was astonished by his diversity. He handles some of the most challenge classical trumpet parts ever written with ease. The London Symphony Orchestra does a wonderful job backing Sandoval's powerful trumpet playing. I am a trumpet player, so I especially appreciate Arturo's talent, but all listeners of classical music will love this album for its beauty alone. One of the greatest living trumpet players playing some of the greatest songs ever written. His own concerto is brilliant, especially considering his afro-cuban jazz roots. His cadenzas also add to these masterpieces. A must for the classical or trumpet fan.

Only a couple of cuts on this CD really grooved me. The merging of jazz and Latin is my cup of tea (or substitute a beverage of your own), but I was disappointed in this, especially after seeing the 5-star reviews. I was suspicious from the beginning, with the sappy elevator-music first cut. And, in a rreal jazz band, more than the leader, or one person solos. Here, more than one solo[d, but not enough. Too arranged. I kept wanting to hear an instrumental voice break out from the assembled mass, but rarely did. Maybe Sandoval should have let someone else produce this--it seems too self-centered, including all the old-fashioned posed photos of him in the small brochure included with the CD. Oh, the percussion was tops sthroughout--but even then, more solos!

Coconut Groove is a perfect example of the master technician, Arturo, in action. The speed and accuracy at which Arturo plays is simply put, amazing.
