Just what one can expect

Being a fan of McCoy Tyner already, I had my expectation for this CD, and it was definitely met. It's a wonderful listen all the way through, as one would expect. He's such a master at his craft that he carries the song at points and provides inflections at others where another instrument takes over for the moment.

Little did I know when I first bought this CD that it's a compilation. That was a surprise just for the fact of it; it doesn't change the high quality of this CD either way, as it's a great listen.

To listen to this album (I assume part solo and part trio) you would think McCoy Tyner has hands the size and weight of hammers. He rings out loud and clear and passionately. He doesn't. He is a well-centered gentleman with relative small hands and a passionate sole. Don't compare this with his work with the Jazztet and John Coltrane Quartet. This was recorded after 'Trane passed and McCoy matured as a musician. I'd buy it blind. I probably already have the individual albums in my collection. This is American Jazz music of the highest level.

Explorations of Jazz Roots

This album is GREAT! It has great examples of classic jazz musicians going back and exploring thier rhythmic roots and inspirations from the mother land and putting them into a modern context. Outstanding jazz musicians!!! The only thing it could use more of is down home african music without the american jazz flavor applied to it. This would give an even greater insight into the history and roots of our jazz and rhythmic structures. It is a MUST OWN for any jazz fan and percussionist! I LOVE IT!

A very well put together collection by the people at Picante records. It's always good to hear new versions of classic tunes. The CD doesn't offer anything new but includes some all-time afro-cuban jazz classics (Come Candela, Manteca, Para Ti, Con Mi Ritmo)

Two tracks make this CD worth getting for your collection and those are track 2 (Mayeya) and the final track (Afro Blue). Mayeya is incredible with it's piano lead-in and keeps your head swaying with the beautiful horns. The 10 minute Afro Blue on this CD is just awesome!! The first 4 or so minutes is a conga solo by the Master which leads into the title track. In this track you hear some of the afro-cuban religious music which has become a staple in most Mongo Santamria CD's. These have been, unfortunately, not included in this collection.

One thing to note about this CD is that it is one of the more musically balanced Mongo CD's I've heard. There are no conga heavy tunes and each instrument is given an opportunity to shine. This can be good and bad, but it's pulled off rather well in this collection. It's definately a different type of Mongo Santamaria CD but one worth buying.

Just great. I listened "Naima" thanks to a on-line broadcast, first time. Immediatly I got no one doubt: I bought this CD. Soon. And I enjoid very much the hot, elegant beauty of the other tunes of this All-Stars album signed with the 'chicano' West-Coast spirit of 70' and 80'. Expecially 'bout "Soul Sauce" (immortal Cal Tjader in my Godness) and the unespectable, incredibly beautiful, "Stolen Moments". Oliver Nelson must be very proud of this version.
Trust im me: I'm a Latin Jazz lover since late 70'... Please get this album.
