This is a good concert recorded at Circo Voador (Flying Circus) in Rio de Janeiro by this great duo from Minas Gerais; Flavio Venturini on keyboards and vocals; blending his MPB-oriented style with master jazz-guitarist Toninho Horta; who also does some vocals here and there.
They are backed up by a very good group of musicians:
Guilherme Arantes / Vocals on cut no. 1
Cidinho / Percussion
Ze Nogueira / Saxophone
Paulinho Carvalho / Bass Guitar
and
Nenem / Drums.

Most every cut in the album is a winner with very notable surprises, but the true highlight (IMO) of the album is cut no. 6 Qualquer Coisa A Ver Com O Paraiso (Anything that has to do with Paradise) written by Flavio and Milton Nascimento; a huge high note in the album.
If you like MPB or Brazilian Jazz; this almost-impposible-to-find gem should be in your collection whenever you see it surf across the web.

One of the best Brazilian Jazz Albums Ever!!!!!!!!!!!

Toninho has been considered by experts and fans everywhere as one of the best guitarists and musicians ever come out of Brazil or elsewhere, and this is perhaps his best album (and that's saying a lot).
Check out two renditions he plays from two countrymen of his:

1) Milton Nascimento's: From the Lonely Afternoons (A true melodic gem that only Milton knows how to write), and...
2) Juarez Moreira's: Diamantina. ooooffffffff!!!!!!!! Toninho has no comparison.
And if that was not sufficient, check out the best cut in the album (or so I think), the tribute to the great Brazilian trombonist Raulzinho; here, he's managed to form a superb nonet with:
Joyce on Vocals
Marcio Montarroyos on Trumpet
Hugo Fattorusso on Keyboards
Robertinho Silva on Drums
Toninho himself on Guitars
Jamil Joanes on Bass
Paulo Guimaraes on Flute
and
Ronaldo & Wanderley Silva on Percussions.

A masterpiece/collectible like few...... don't let it pass you by.

Brilliant and Exotic from two Brazilian Masters

A Word on the Musicians:
First of all, let me tell you that two Brazilian masters joined their efforts to record this album: Mr. Toninho Horta, the guitar and arranger with an orchestra in his mind; plus Mr. Dominguinhos, master of accordion, a very common instrument used by typical music from Brazilian Northeast.

Can you imagine a Jazz musician with plain command of his instrument with the ability to play in high uptempos with feeling, artistry, personality? Ok, that's what you'll listen to ... applied to regional Brazilian music.

A Word on The Music:
Here you'll find Brazilian music but no Bossa Nova, not even traditional samba. Happens that there is a big set of rhythms quite unknown to foreign audiences. One of those rhythms is called 'baiao' (read 'by-on') and it is typically played in Northeastern Brazil for dance in huge balls called 'forro' (read aproximately 'for-haw').

All I have to suggest is that you invest in top quality music though exotic but swinging music.

Brazilian Master on Guitar returns with a Master on Flute
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-09

Great deal! Finally, Toninho Horta and flutist Nicola Stilo decided to record their live work, fortunately in a studio.

Here you'll find Mr. Horta as usual with his guitar and sensitive vocalise driven by his arranger's mind that makes all the difference.

Nicola Stilo was a surpise to me: a new flutist in my collection with brilliant conception in the same level as Horta's.

Repertoire mix 5 standards, jazz or not, with 5 compositions of their own. Coltrane's 'Naima', beautiful Bill Evans' 'Very Early' and Duke Ellington's 'In A Sentimental Mood' are the jazz standards. Also you'll find three Horta's classics here - 'Meu Canario' (aka 'Canario Vizinho Azul'), 'Bons Amigos' and 'Vento' - all with fresh and new approaches.

Beautiful guitar and flute duet.

from website:
The guitar of Toninho Horta is always a treat, but on this 2005 album it's made even better by some lyrically light flute work from Nicola Stilo! The set's got a dreamy quality that really gets at the gentler sound of Horta's work on guitar -- and a few tunes even feature his vocals, singing in a laidback way that has echoes of the earlier bossa era, but a more gently jazzy approach overall. Stilo plays a variety of flutes on the set, and titles include a great version of Coltrane's "Naima", plus "Very Early", "Vento", "My Ideal", "In A Sentimental Mood", "Meu Canario", "Bons Amigos", and "Illusion".
