I have recently become a big fan of Eliane (already big fan of Diana Krall), purchasing her most recent Bill Evan's tribute album. But back to this album, I absolutely love this album, Eliane's voice is so soothing, her phrasing so fine, even when she sings in her native language, it just carries you along.I tear up every time I listen to "That's All", as it embodies exactly what I would like to say to my special someone. You really can't go wrong with this album. The string arrangements are top notch, and Eliane's piano really shines through on "A house is not a home". I will go further in saying, almost any album of Eliane's will have some jewels on it. This one has several.....

"Dreamer" was released 2002 on RCA's Bluebird label and stands as one Elias' best to date. Her amazing piano playing is not really the main focus her like on so many of her recordings, but she does play some great improvisations, though short in length. The string orchestrations are also very well done. Absolutely beautiful.

There are two highlights for me "Call Me" and "A House Is Not A Home." Those two songs are the worth the price of admission, but this is not to say that the whole album isn't great. "Call Me" features some of the lyrical improvisations from Michael Brecker I've ever heard. I'm not a fan of him at all, but am quite shocked to him play with lyricism. He has a great tone on this song as well.

Here's a lineup of all the musicians: Oscar Castro-Neves, Guilherme Monteiro (guitar); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Michael Mainieri(vibraphone); Marc Johnson (bass guitar); and Paulo Braga (drums).

If you're a fan of Eliane Elias, then I would suggest without hesitation to pick up this recording. If you're new to her music, I would start with "Kissed By Nature," "Plays Jobim," or "The Three Americas" first. These are fine introductions to her approach to music and her piano playing.

If you would like to hear her in a big band context, then pickup her collaboration with Bob Brookmeyer called "Impulsive." Highly recommended.

She is like Diana Krall or the gal from Ipanima come to life! I believe she is the lady who orginally sang on Stan Gezts album. Anyway she is amazing and you probably know that already, but if you don't, you won't be dissapointed. The CD is excellent!

I felt very lucky to find Eliane Elias, and you will be too!

Just add my five-star rating to the bunch and stamp a big "ditto" on this because everything everyone's saying about this album is true. Soft, seductive, soothing. That's this album.

Don't just sit there. Buy this.

I have seven of her albums and this is her best. This is brilliantly arranged and beautifully accompanied. With Elaine's soft yummy voice and her elegant touch on the keys, she makes an ordinary song extraordinary. I particularly like Call Me, So Nice and That's All, but they are all great. Guys, put this on and you'll have their panties on the lampshade in no time. Enjoy.

I love this album and play it all the time. The material is great, and Elias has a unique approach which blends cool and vibrant jazz with a subtle Brazilian rhythmic flow. Her support too is excellent, with Eddie Gomez playing melodic bass lines that at times sound like a pizzicato 'cello or even a guitar! Both percussionists play with great subtlety and together they create a magical soundworld, heard to best advantage on the elusive 'Sabia'. This track and 'Zingaro' are truly haunting. Jazz fans will love what Eliane does with 'One Note Samba' and 'Desafinado' and there is plenty of lively and witty soloing along with the ballads. Highly recommended.

Obviously, something brought you to this artist and this particular CD. For me, it was hearing her amazing rendition of Don't Ever Go Away on a local radio station, and this cut alone is worth the price of admission.

The title is a bit deceiving, however, and I really didn't get what I was expecting. When one thinks of Antonio Carlos Jobim, one thinks of bossa nova and memorable songs from one of the best composers ever. What Eliane Elias has done is marry these melodies with true jazz, giving each song a twist with improvisations that only a gifted jazz artist can produce. For those who know these melodies well, this will be a real treat. For those who don't, you may find yourself struggling to find the melody as she playfully dances around it.

The only dissapointment here is the last cut, where she attempts to sing Don't Ever Go Away. While her playing is superb, her singing really leaves me cold, and it was a dissapointing finish to an otherwise excellent CD. One more vocal would have dropped my rating to 4 stars.

Bottom line, if you love jazz, and Jobim, this CD is a real treat, and some excellent work by Elias. But this CD isn't for everyone, especially the person who is looking for a "first" Jobim CD, or someone who is expecting a more contemporary version of his songs.

Elaine Elias in one of his best works.

Elaine Elias is a talented and extraordinary well gifted brazilian jazz pianist - Her appoach and arrangements made in every track of this album are simply gold dust .
Antonio Carlos Jobim represents one the supreme names in the bossa nova mood . His name is so clearly engaged to Brazil that Aguas de Marzo or Girl from Ipanema are titles that have surpased its own age and have signed its memories in the immortality . Think in Stan Getz , and Astrud Gilberto for instance among other famous examples . They won Grammy Award in 1964 thanks to their undeniable talent , and supported for the lyric mood of Jobim .
All these performances are of first rate and confirm once more the prodigious talent of this artist .
A must for any jazz lover !

Eliane Swings to Bop and Broadway

Eliane often offers a mixture of musical genres on her CDs, but here she does not unless one wants to differentiate bebop jazz from broadway jazz/popular. In any event, this is one of her most cohesive CDs. Eliane had previously recorded many tracks of this genre, but never an entire CD full. She plays music from American masters like Dizzie Gillespie, Charlie Mingus, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Cole Porter (who gets two entries, including the title cut). Berlin's contribution is his familiar "They Say [that Falling in Love Is] Wonderful."

Eliane operates with two different bass and drum teams, but there are no other musicians. She does some brief vocals on four tracks, and the rest are instrumental: The thing is the music. She does not sing on her two good originals: "Bowing to Bud" (lively) and "That's All It Was" (slow and pretty). My favorite song is Mingus' "Nostalgia in Times Square," with its sexy motif. This genre is not what I look for first when I seek out her music, but I appreciate her consistently great piano work in performing the numbers here. Always very dexterous and fluid, and one who does great improvisations, she entirely succeeds with the jazzy texture. When things move to soft and pretty, her piano always shines. She is more known for her Brazilian and modern jazz/pop work, but here she shows she can swing. This CD will be very enjoyable to fans of the genre.

This CD is a joy to listen to. I had not heard Elias before purchasing this CD. She has created a CD filled with traditional jazz sound and nicely showcasing her exceptional abilities on the piano. Although she does not exhibit a strong singing voice, the several songs on which she sings will not disappoint.

Eliane's Piano Illuminates Brazilian Classics
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2009-01-07
This 1992 CD was Eliane's second one devoted to Brazilian classics; she had recorded "Eliane Elias Plays Jobim" three years prior. Thus, this Brazilian beauty here performs her native sounds and handles all the production and arrangements with a dose of experience. Her piano dominates over the rhythm section. Eliane's vocals amount to only a few brief chants and harmonies; the focus is on instrumental work.

Two Jobim bossa novas, his groundbreaking "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Wave," start things off as Eliane establishes her pattern of some interpreting and some soloing (at times it seems the same thing). She does four-song medleys each of songs by Milton Nascimiento and Ivan Lins. On his entries, Ivan chips in with occasional wailing vocals that are not very appealing. In the Nascimiento medley, Eliane ethereally orbits the "Cravo e Canela" motif, suspending things with tension then delivering, making for very beautiful music. She also cruises in Ary Barroso's "Bahia" and the Jobim classic bossa nova "No More Blues" (Chega de Saudade). Her slow and pretty (but brief) "Fantasia" is sandwiched between the two to make a nice run of three. The title track is Eliane's only original composition.

Sometimes Eliane's piano work is pleasantly meandering -- light or flowery -- and other times it is lively Brazilian jazz/bossa nova. She performs a lot of straight-ahead or directional soloing, and she supplies the potency when called for in the lively moments. She captures the spirit and the beauty of these Brazilian classics in what makes for very enjoyable listening. Eliane has performed Brazilian classics on many of her CDs now, but this is one of a limited number whose tracks are all Brazilian songs, which she plays so well.

I make my living as a classical pianist. For fun, I teach music at the local community college and Church. I was in Des Moines, Iowa to perform a concert with the Des Moines Symphony, and I was offered caught Ms.Elias at the Civic center. Just the site of her takes a man's breath away, but once she started playing,it was incredible. I've bought several of her albums since, and I am not disappointed with any of them.

This Brazilian beauty,in my opinion, is one of the greatest pianists I have heard in a very long time.
