Sal Mosca Music

Superb straight ahead piano jazz in the Bill Evans / Billy Collucci tradition. A great listen.

Recorded live in NYC, the performance of a lifetime yet again for Sal Mosca. He shows every aspect of his ability and musical tastes in every note. The energy just pours out of this CD. This is a Master of his craft.

No one plays the piano, improvises, or sounds like Sal Mosca. You can hear the entire history and future of jazz in every note that Sal's plays; whether he is improvising on Lennie Tristano's lines, his originals, standards, Ellington's tunes, - no matter what - every note swings, every note is placed perfectly, everything is spontanteous - this is music of the highest order and totally original. This is what players must have felt like after hearing Tatum, Powell, and Tristano!

I was there when this recording was made (Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, NYC). I can tell you that this is Sal at perhaps his finest. Solo, in a large auditorium with an adoring audience, Sal performs an improvised concert that was 30 years in the making. I can hear many other instrumental tones flash out of his music during the performance, such is the intensity of his expression. As a Lennie Tristano student, Sal has few peers. He performs on other albums with Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, Peter Ind, Jimmy Halperin, and has played with Miles Davis and Max Roach, among other greats. He also has other solo recordings available. Both disciples of Lennie Tristano, but each with their own unique sound, as it should be. Live at the Vanguard.
This is Bebop reworked and made even more harmonically inventive, melodically beautiful, and perhaps less rhythmically complex.
Easy on the ears, but interesting for the brain.

Warne Marsh, by far the most melodically, harmonically, and technically talented of the late 40's cool jazz saxaphonists teams up with one of the most talented, but unheralded pianists of the modern era Sal Mosca, a disciple of Bud Powell and Lennie Tristano.

This amazing music was recorded Live at the Village Vanguard in 1981 when both men were at their musical peaks; they were stretching out into new places under the influence, perhaps, of al lthe experimental music going on around them.

The results yield incredibly free interpretations of standards and originals that are like eating grand-ma's meatloaf with some new gourmet sauce and a fine dark chocholate desert.

I never tire of these guys. Exciting, harmonious, interesting blissful jazz music with brains and delicacy.
