Anthony Braxton Music

I bought this CD for the two half-hour chats between Braxton and Graham Lock (which are great fun to listen to, by the way), but I'm a fan of the music here too, which has a gentleness not evident on many of the other Braxton recordings I've heard. The solo by bassist Mark Dresser on the second CD, for example, offers a lovely respite from the usual collision-by-design pieces played by this quartet. With its mix of compositions from throughout Braxton's career, the high quality of the players, and the interview material, this is as good an Anthony Braxton primer as you can get: a great way into his music for the curious.

The only thing I can think to complain about is the low mastering level (similar to the Birmingham set). You have to really crank the thing up to hear it all properly! Leo: remaster these, eh!

High water mark in Braxtonia one of his classics, showcases some of Braxton's major big band compositions complex, ambitious and swinging like craaaazyy. Man can write ! Also a straight orchestral march and some more abstract pieces, Line up reads like a who's who of 70's contemporary jazz all great names. If there 's only one AB you have room for this is a good one as any. Agree with reviewer below all the 4tet stuff on Arista plus this one needs REISSUE ! listening rec company ?

This is somewhere in Braxton's top ten,before he peaked with "(Santa Cruz)1993".

This Cd documents a historic meeting between two creative music legends, Anthony Braxton and George Lewis. The concert was recorded on October 23, 1976. The Cd, besides providing the listener with the consistently brilliant musical interplay between Braxton and Lewis, is also extremely diverse. Braxton's compositions are featured (Comp. 6f and Comp. 64) as is a wonderful rendition of Donna Lee, a standard that has been recorded by Braxton before. In sum, by listening to this Cd, people can expand their horizons while hearing the entire history of Jazz in the music of these masters.

This cd is a great mixture of bop and free jazz, and avant garde or contemporary Classical elements thrown in for good measure. The playing is intense at times while others it is contemplative. I have many Braxton cds and i enjoy him best when he is actually 'swinging' like he's doing on at least 3 of the 5 tracks in here.
