Rock Hall of Famer Allen Toussaint alert!

Allen Toussaint's Brickyard Blues is a composistion he wrote that was a hit for Frankie Miller and 3 Dog Night in the 1970's, and this version here is great with Allen himself singing. I'd add that some of the tracks are a lil too "lite" or "easy" jazzy for my goofy gutbucket groove tastes, but overall the spirit of New Orleans is in here.

A spicy combination of musicians!

Basically noone else in the jazz GUITAR world is out there mixing all that history/SWING into a readily identifiable sound. I think more guitar players need to listen to Doug for inspiration...he has taste, knowledge, swing, and a unique sound...continuing in the jazz spirit. Buy this album, its amazing.

Wow!

This CD was recommeded by a friend who is a very talented professional jazz musician. I respect and value his opinion. I was amazed by how free but beautifully organized the arrangements were of the pieces on the Bluestate CD. Doug Wamble's voice is A+++. If you're looking for a fun listen while being a jazz snob, this is a CD for you.

This is what a band is supposed to sound like!

Here you have a stunning follow up by the Doug Wamble Quartet. This is how great jazz music (although it is tough to label Wamble, the music is rooted there) is created--you take a band of top notch musicians, and you stay together and evolve as a group. This record is a testament to why this philosophy produces the best new music hitting the market, instead of the normal "star sessions" that are thrown about. The music on those records will be forgotten with time. I have a feeling Doug's won't, and will continue to get better.

Roots of contemporary South African jazz
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-31
This is an incredible album, not only for the music, but also for the work that went into recording it, to finding it, restoring it, and bringing it to us today, a small time capsule from a world most of use know little about.

For more than two decades beginning in the 1930's, Rhodesian Hugh Tracey traveled across sub-Saharan Africa recording local musicians in local settings, capturing on aluminum disc and on tape thousands of hours of material from artists the world never knew. For years those tapes have been on deposit at a South African university, where Zambian born musician Michael Baird set out to listen to, sort, annotate, and compile for cd a collection of some of Tracey's best recordings, now numbering 21 volumes.

Many of Tracey's recordings have been previously released on LPs, but apparently this is the first time this music has ever been issued. Featuring jazz bands from Rhodesia, this CD is a monumental addition to the history of jazz recordings not only in Africa but in the world for allowing us to listen in on a style of jazz unlike any that was being played anywhere in the 1950's. Here we have bands still playing jazz with tubas and banjos, but far from being preservation outfits these musicians are living in the present, making fresh music out of local traditions, laying down the roots that will bring forth the flowering of modern South African jazz.

This disc deserves the attention of jazz fans everywhere.
