Master mix of the best funk/soul/R&B in existence

This collection is perhaps the funkiest set of songs outside of James Brown. This is the kind of music that your body just cannot help moving to. Mostly 70's style funk. Whether you just tap your feet, nod your head, or "get up, get on up" -- this is your collection. The happy party music here makes for a lively experience, and I recommend you turn up your bass knob just a little to hear those groovin' bass lines and funky percussion riffs. Simply put, and at this value, this CD collection ranks up there with any on the market today. But the best part of it all, is that these are the rare gems you never get to hear on the radio, and are all hits in their own right.

This CD set contain all the music we grew up with if you are between 30-45. Play this at a party and you will have everyone on the dance floor. It will bring back happy memories from the summers of days gone by. This set is a must for anyone who listened to Dazz, Slave, Bootsy, etc.

This collection is truly amazing I love this kind of music and I think that more people should be exsposed to this kind of music. I especially love original Stack O Lee Blues by Long Cleeve Reed and little Harey Hull.
This is rare music and it may sound verry fuzzy and crackly on some songs but it's still amazing music. So in other words whip out your credit card and buy it NOW! Don't even think about it just buy it.

GREAT " STUFF " FOR ANYONE

I would first like to say that I am NOT a 78 rpm collector. I do own about 250 CDs + maybe 50 cassette tapes virtually all of which are " Oldies. " Most of my Oldies primarilly consist of " Doo-Wop " with some Acapella, Rockabilly, Blues, Mid-60s Rock and R & B and lastly, a little Boogie-Woogie thrown in . Some of my favorite artists are JIMMY BEAUMONT & THE SKYLINERS, DION & THE BELMONTS, NOLAN STRONG & THE DIABLOS, THE PARAGONS, THE JESTERS, STREET CORNER SOCIETY, ELVIS PRESLEY, LITTLE RICHARD, JACKIE WILSON, THE COLLINS KIDS, BILLY LEE RILEY, BRIAN SETZER, BLIND WILLIE MC TELL, BLIND WILLIE JOHNSON, ALBERT AMMONS & PETE JOHNSON. I have listed all of the above because even though I own & appreciate every genre & artist listed above.....I also own & thoroughly enjoy the JOE BUSSARD CD.. " DOWN IN THE BASEMENT " !!!....As I said....I think that you DON'T have to be a 78 rpm collector to understand & appreciate that this is GREAT " STUFF " FOR ANYONE !!!!!!! ....Unlike other reviewers ( probably because I am not a 78 rpm collector ) I had not previously heard of the likes of the " Georgia Pot Lickers " ? ....However; like other reviewers I was attracted to " THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF " both by the Crumb illustrated cover + the knowledge that YAZOO never does seem to have any bad releases.....After listening to this CD; I can only agree that it really is " THE STUFF THAT DREAMS ARE MADE OF "

Neat set!

Much like the Old Hat compilation of records from Joe Bussard's collection ("Down In The Basement"), this 2-CD set is a hodge-podge of old-time string bands, blues, a little jazz, and other so-called "roots" music from the 1920s and early 1930s. This is rare stuff indeed--most of it unavailable on CD elsewhere, and you can forget finding copies of the original 78s! Fortunately, the transfers by Rich Nevins are marvelous; computerized "reprocessing" has been kept to a minimum and these records sound like they should: bright, clear, and natural. Yes, there's a little surface noise, but the serious record collector shouldn't mind that a bit. So many producers of reissues of vintage recoridngs seem to try to remove as much surface noise as possible, leaving recordings that are clean, yes, but dull and lifeless as well. Even with the light crackle, these transfers project a beautiful "presence." The selections are interesting too--I was especially drawn to the Luke Jordan selection ("If I Call You Mama"), Osey Helton's fiddle solo "Green River," and "Bells of Love" by the African-American shape note a-capella group, Middle Georgia Singing Convention No. 1 (and if you like this last group, check out the Document CD "Atlanta, GA Gospel" which includes their complete recorded output). The liner notes that accompany the set are lengthy, but unfortunately they reveal relatively little about the music on these records. The notes are mostly stories of how the records came to be acquired and ramblings about the hobby of collecting in general (not just records!) from producer Rich Nevins. This isn't necessarily bad--it makes for fun reading!--but I'd like to know a bit more about the music. Admittedly, there is probably very little known about the musicians on the recordings, but I'd have liked *something.* Also, as others have pointed out, there's no discography: no recording dates or locations, no matrix numbers, no issue numbers, no personnel listings, nada. In a set so clearly targeted to record collectors, this seems inexcusable. In addition, I'm disappointed in the DVD case-shaped packaging, which while elegant and attractive, doesn't store easily with the rest of my CDs. I would have much preferred a standard 2-CD double case. Because of the way the packaging has been made, it's often difficult for me to slide the booklet back into its paper pocket: the bottom frequently gets snagged on the cardboard foldover inside the pocket (something that could have easily been avoided with more standard packaging). Still, on the whole, this is a remarkable set making available some outstanding records in really outstanding sound. Every 78 rpm record collector should be delighted with it--I certainly am.

This product is a quirky collection of roots music that really has no common thread running through other than they are extremely rare recordings collected over a long period. The discs are extemely well packaged with extensive liner notes. The notes also contain a history of two brothers who were eccentric (nuts) collectors in NYC.

Treasure trove for fanatics

This collection is marvelous as a broad-strokes portrait of the music Americans were recording and listening to in a time well before the hegemony of the corporate conglomerate recording industry, when anyone with the admittedly cumbersome apparatus of the time could start their own record company. None of these songs were huge hits of their time, but many of them are treasures of American roots music. I've got to say, though, that it was the R. Crumb cover art that pulled me in.

Sound quality very good, the CD it self there's none to compare what King Curtis did with this album, the song s he choose to play, and the musicianship, and the arrangements

One of the last great recordings

If you enjoy King Curtis you should purchase this cd for your collection. I grew up listening to this album and it is without a doubt one of the last great recordings of King Curtis before he was murdered in New York City on August 13, 1971. You will not be disappointed the sampler does not even come close to the full version.

Well, what can I say, but stay away form this cd. Sadly I've purchased this "oldie but goodie" and really enjoyed the selections. But on the end of every song(yes every song) you can hear the turntable it was playing on. There is a loud, humming noise of a turning phonograph player that really should of been faded out. I know others like Ace and Bear have master tapes but with no tape sources, they must rely on vinyl sources, but this is really a bad job of that. Do yourself a favor, stay clear and maybe buy the album,if your lucky, on e-bay.

Nice collection of west coast western swing

Review Date: 2003-07-11
During the 1940s California became a hotbed of country music, due to the immigration of so many Southerners during the Depression and World War II. This set brings together some great music from that period by lesser known stars of the West Coast country scene. All of it is good, swing music with a country feel in the vein of Bob Wills, Spade Cooley, and Hank Penny.

Amazing western swing oldies!

A fun, collection of obscure California country artists, mostly recording for microscopic labels. The best known artists on here are Jimmy Wakely and Tex Williams; cheapo label veteran Doye O'Dell has one great track on here, standing at the head of the pack along with his unknown brethren. During the first third of this CD, the throughline seems to be "artists who couldn't quite keep in meter," but things pick up midway with several great little singles that oughtta make you smile. An interesting aspect of this scene was that *everyone* used accordions in their bands, which was somewhat common elsewhere, but not nearly so prevalent as in the Golden State. Cool stuff.

Really worth it. The songs are fantastic and the singers rip into the stuff. The instrumentals are excellent. If you like Western Swing (and who doesn't?) this is one for the collection.

Embryonic Jazz/Hillbilly Music

Review Date: 1999-10-10
I believe the music in this CD evolved to become Jazz, Rockabilly, Hillbilly and Rock'n'Roll music in the decade which followed it. It it obvious that so much music which followed this, has been influenced by it. The steel guitar popularity of the time is there, and it really is like acupuncture for the brain. I think this generation "had it" more that we realize.

This CD is essential for rare western swing enthusiasts.

Anyone who is interested in rare western swing music should strongly consider SWINGING WEST. KRAZY KAT compiled a fine single disc of rare music for western swing fans. While the sound on these recordings is not always first rate, the age, rarity, and amount of songs more than make up for this. This cd contains songs with a more traditional, raw sound than more slickly produced artists (i.e. Spade Cooley). Well worth the price.
