AFter first purchasing this CD some 15 years ago I found out that my father was actually at the superdome when they performed this fantastic meeting of new orleans' best. If you love Al Hirt and Pete Fountain and you don't have this in your collection, get it now and you will be blown away.

I agree with the other reviewers - hardy the best swing CD out there. But, it's LaserLight - what do you expect? Only 10 tracks, iffy mastering, nonexistent annotation. On the other hand: this is the easiest to find among very few CD's that capture Gene Krupa's spirited 1945 take on "Jingle Bells." It's a good performance of Krupa's Jazz Trio (with pianist Teddy Napoleon and saxophonist Charlie Ventura) and a decent recording taken from a radio transcription (that is, not an official release at the time). Again, not absolutely essential, but a delight for collectors.
Lacking greatly in swing

I'll second JohnSloan's comments. Not a whole lot of swinging here. As he says, the best cuts are the ones from Nutcracker. The Teagarden version of "Christmas Song" won't make anyone forget Nat Cole's...or Mel Torme's for that matter.
For $5.98 it's not pricey...it just depends on how much you want to spend on the 4 tunes (the first number is OK) of note here. You may want to get something else if you're paying new price, but a used copy of this would probably be worthwhile.

While I agree with the previous poster, that this really isn't a swing cd, it still has some nice songs that you don't ordinarily hear at Christmas. It is a nice cd if you want a change in your christmas music selection. And you can get it for agreat price too!
Doesn't "Swing" as much as it claims to

The main selling point for this disc has to be its bargain basement price. I would probably have called it 2 stars if I had paid regular CD prices. The simple fact is, it is not really as "swinging" as its title claims. Some of the tracks are downright dull. The best tracks are the three that are taken from "The Nutcracker" ("Dance of the Suger Plum Fairies" by the Larry Clinton Orchestra, "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers" by Red Nichols & His Five Pennies, and "The Nutcracker Suite" by the Les Brown Orchestra. Another worthwhile track is "He'll Be Coming Down the Chimney" by the Guy Lombardo Trio. On the whole, it is about half a swinging big band Christmas.

Never thought that I can find the name of a song "Red River Rose" by The Ames Brother but don't know how to bye. If possible, do you have any idea of an old album named "East of India" it's the music album like easy listening, 40 years up ago.

Both Al Hirt and Pete Fountain deliver superb performances, but this recording is just as much about the musical interactons between them and with the audience. Listening, I felt as if I was attending a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon, one of those where it all comes together musically.
This CD includes wonderful improvisations by Hirt and Fountain. I believe you can't do better than this.
This is a live 1975 recording made at a New Orleans festival called "Super Jazz I".
