I was extremely dissappointed to hear this CD from the great Lisa Ono. The CD cover promises tunes done in the style of bossa nova, but there is NO bossa nova on this CD. It's hard to understand how she recorded great bossa nova for many years, and seems to have forgotten the rhythm of bossa nova. But some of her earlier recordings are truly great bossa classics.

Lisa Ono is a great singer. This album has her singing classic spanish latino hits that remind me of the past. All are in spanish and very well mixed. But all of the songs in this volume are romantic ballads. The list of songs are

This CD is worth every penny. If you are looking for romantic music with a latino breeze for a dinner for 2, this is the right cd for you.

Nothing can be more apt to describe Lisa Ono's voice than that of a cool sea breeze; soothing, gentle and alluring.

Unlike other conventional bossanova singers who frequently inject lots of heavy exuberance into their singing (for example, Omara Portuondo), Lisa avoids that and chooses to go for a more subtle, jazzy singing style; a style that makes her albums so alluring and charming. Listeners sense that light, feminine, honey-like voice and succumb to her spell. It's a voice that is replete with tenderness and beauty.

Add tenderness and beauty to bossanova tunes and what you have is an excellent musical gem. Romance Latino Vol 3 is her best among the Romance Latino collection. It is also one of the very few albums where I really enjoyed every single track.

The vibrant opening track itself sets the mood for the rest of the album; Cachito (Little boy) has a joyous beat and effectively harnesses the motherly, tender voice of Lisa to good effect as the lyrics reflect a mother's love for her little boy.

Lisa's rendition of Besame Mucho remains the best and most memorable version I have heard as well. Other stand out tracks include the festive-like El Bodeguero, Cachita and Cancion Para Santiago de Cuba.

The album's audio standard is excellent; bass is subtle and sufficient enough to lend some nice touches of 'oomph' to the tunes, thus making sure that Lisa's voice is never overshadowed by other elements.

In short, this is the BEST bossanova album I ever had! I can only hope Lisa would release a concert DVD soon. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend her concert last year when she stopped over in Singapore for her Asia tour.

Thom Jurek in the AllMusic guide provided the best review I've seen of this album: "This early album by Lisa Ono offers a solid look at the originality in both arrangement and delivery that she delivers in her wonderful read of the Brazilian new bossa nova tradition. Recorded in 1992, Serenata Carioca is more lush than many of her later recordings. Arrangement is the key to most of her recordings and this one is no exception, working with a variety of different groups and arrangers, including Antonio Adolfo, Clare Fischer, Helio-Celso Suarez, J.T. Meirelles, and Jota Moraes. Ono wrote or co-wrote half of the material here, including the gloriously spare and haunting title track. But in a sense, the material, fine as it is, hardly seems the point; it's that voice - shimmering with something hidden underneath, lilting in the breeze on top of a guitar and piano, adorned with subtle percussive accompaniment and jazzy horns - that carries everything here. With Ono, it's all music, all bossa in particular; her phrasing and delivery are nearly peerless and the varied and ambiguous emotions in her vocalizing are beguiling. I received this CD from my best friend Yukari from Tokyo. I was really surprised. Nice bossa-nova songs sung warmly and cleary. I can say - Japanese Astrud Gilberto. Lisa Ono sings with a very good feeling of Bossa-nova, nice and mellow. Among many girls singing bossa-nova, whose roots are not from Brasil like for example Lisa Ekdahl from Sweden (try "Sings Salvadore Poe"), Basia from Poland ("Time and Tide"), Lisa Ono is the next I would like to recommend to bossa-nova fans.

The latest album from one of the hippest Bossa Nova performers in the world, Lisa Ono's "SOUL & BOSSA" is out and what a wonderful and pleasant album.

For those not familiar with Lisa Ono, Lisa's roots on bossa nova music came at an early age with her father having a club in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When the family moved to Japan, her father opened up a restaurant which featured bossa nova and samba music.

Having released many albums since 1989 in English, French and Portguese, her 2007 album "SOUL & BOSSA" features the artist singing covers of popular songs such as Carol King's "You've Got A Friend", Otis Redding's classic"(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay", Marvin Gaye's "What's Going on", Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed", James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and much more and giving them a bossa nova spin.

Her takes on songs such as the James Brown and Marvin Gaye classic turns out remarkably well. I just found the bossa nova interpretations of the classics on this album done to be remarkably done and gives a fresh dulcet interpretation at the songs that many of us enjoyed for so long.

The CD booklet contains the lyrics for the album.

I love this album. I appreciate bossa nova music but Lisa Ono's beautiful vocals and the beautiful music works hand in hand to give classics an interesting new spin.

The Asian release of this album features a bonus track of "Eu Voce" which is another beautiful song included in this release.

Lisa Ono has won many awards and this album exemplifies why she's on top in the bossa nova music scene. A highly recommended album!

Soul & Bossa

Lisa Ono is Japan's most famous bossa singer, who was born in Brazil. With her silky smooth brazilian style vocal, this CD filled with American Oldies from the 60's to the 80's, yet Lisa has transformed them into her own unique bossa nova sound.

I have to say that this CD is a must for all bossa nova fans to collect.
