Lisa Ono Music

This is Lisa's very first album. She's one of great bossa nova singers. Her unique but gentle voice is very soothing. When I want to relax, I always play her CD. Her upbeat songs are excellent, too. The title track makes your body sway! This CD contains great songs. "You're So Unique" is sung in English. Tracks are:

Lisa Ono is an extraordinary Bossa Nova singer which is why I bought this CD I just wanted all her CD's. You pay more for her but it's worth it. In this CD, she is singing in English instead of Portuguese, and she is singing some traditional US standards like On the Sunny Side of the Street, As Time Goes by, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, it's not her regular fare but she sings them with a good Bossa Nova spin. If you like these songs you might enjoy her rendition of them. Even if you did not like the original versions, listening to Lisa doing them might change your mind, but I would not recommend this as your first Lisa Ono CD.

For this 1999 CD, Lisa teams up with Oscar Castro-Neves, one of Brazil's best known bossa nova arrangers and composers. This is not a standard bossa nova album. For this release, the two decided to explore famous American songs and film music from the 1940's/50's, and recorded them with upbeat jazz and bossa nova arrangements. Songs are sung in English and Portuguese. This CD sold over 200,000 copies in Japan -- very good for a bossa nova release! Highlights include "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "Moonlight Serenade", and "Night and Day".

This is Lisa's seventh album. This outstanding recording includes appearances by Tom Jobim, Mario Adnet, Sivuca, Danilo Caymmi, and Paulo Jobim. The songs on this album range from beautiful quiet arrangements for voice and guitar like "Um Abraço No Joao" to fun up-tempo samba arrangements like "Samba da Esperança". Antonio Carlos Jobim sings with Lisa and plays piano on the lovely song "Estrada Branca". Also displayed is some wonderful clarinet work by the famous Brazilian clarinet player Paulo Moura on "A Gafieira".

If you like Astrud Gilberto then you will most likely enjoy Jambalaya -Bossa Americana... Ono has a mellow and comforting style that makes for easy listening. A very soothing voice that's quite likeable. I get the feeling that her various selections of artists' signature songs in this CD does not try to impose upon nor replace their original renditions but intends to convey to the listener her laid-back and pristine musical talent. So give a listen without comparing or judging and you should be quite satisfied.
