So like I searched for this CD, everywhere, for maybe 5 years. Don't ask me why it didn't occur to me sooner to look on amazon.com. The CD is an amazing blend of Brazilian melody, Afro/Cuban funk, and pop influences with a just a hint of jazz. Musical contributors such as Stevie Wonder, Mike Sembello ("She's a Maniac")and, of course, Sergio Mendes, as well as the mellifluous harmmonies and musicianship of "the New Brasil'77", make this a must have for any "Sergio"phile.

Following the great Homecooking Sergio Mendes' New Brasil 77 put out this self titled follow up album. This album was recorded not long after Songs in the Key of Life and it shows-fresh from his work on that album Sembello brings Stevie Wonder himself along with hom on this album to contribute to the smooth "Love City" and the marvelously funky "The Real Thing",both of which are loaded with Wonder's brilliant songwriting tradmarks and are among the best songs Sergio Mendes produced in the 70's.And as far as funk is concered Sembello again adds his spice to the absolute MONSTER instrumental "Mozambique",which not only jams but jams HARD and the groove just embeds itself into your head."P-Ka-Poo" visits the same territory but adds horns blasting, latin percussion and vocals but grooves nonetheless. As far as covers breezy versions of "Love Me Tomorrow" which is actually a little bouncy and Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now"-even though Sembello wrote it "Why" actually does sound like Stevie Wonder where "Peninsula" showcases very strong Brazilian roots. The album ends with "Life",an easy going latin-pop groove with kind of a cute synthesizer hook at the beginning.Any fan of Homecooking or any Stevie Wonder music from this period will feel right at home here and will be in for a pleasant (and often extremely funky) listening experience.

A great, funky album from Sergio, featuring some standout tunes, notably his Stevie Wonder-penned minor hit "The Real Thing," which got a lot of airplay in some markets but which sadly failed to crack the Top 40. There are also great reworkings of Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now" and the gorgeous "Why" co-written by Michael Sembello, both of which introduce some Quarteto em Cy harmonies into the Mendes vocal palette, something he would continue to exploit for the rest of his 70s Elektra output. This was Sergio's group with two drummers, on top of his usual battery of percussion, and the rhythm arrangements positively crackle with energy. Highly recommended.

Brings back memories from I.S.U.

at time of writing there was no description of the album or tracklist given.
I believe this is the album with the 'football team' photos on the cover. I've been trying to track this for a while, seems only to have become available on CD wef 18Sep02, before then only available on tape or vinyl in second hand stores. (my dad's got a copy).

track listing:
1. Love me tomorrow
2. Love city
3. Mozambique
4. If you leave me now
5. Peninsula
6. Why
7. The real thing
8. P-Ka-Boo
9. Life

i'd label the album into the upbeat latin-jazz genre, but has a slight disco feel to it also- mostly the bass lines i think - released 1977 in the disco era.
lots of electric piano with latin rhythms, disco style bass, some 'chikchik' guitar, all female vocals.

I loved this album. I bought it years ago. It was fantastic then and it is still fantastic now. "Love City" is very upbeat and makes me want to dance. I love everything Sergio Mendes puts out. I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo a mastectomy and chemotherapy five years ago. While I was undergoing chemo, I would listen to Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66. It always picked up my spirits and made me feel so much better. Family, love of life, and Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 kept me going during the worst time of my life. I just celebrated the 5th year anniversary of being cancer free. I credit Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 with helping me to survive. I just wish I could find "Crystal Illusions" on CD. That was my favorite Brazil '66 album to listen to during the worst those hard times. I still listen to it today. I am truly grateful for Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66. Thank You Brazil '66.

This is an underappreciated GEM!

Too bad this is not a domestic release anymore. This is a musically rich CD, and Stevie Wonder (who is simply awesome) writes one of the tracks. Sergio Mendes' genius will never fade, and I think this is a fabulous represenation of what kind of work he is able to produce. Fork over the extra bucks. You won't regret it!

As good as it gets

This is an extraordinary work by Sergio. His melodies and rhythms are unexcelled. This, for my money, is his best collection although I find no fault in any of his other works.

PURE CLASSIC

I purchased this CD because I am a BIG fan of Sergio M and Brasil '65, '66 and '77. This is the NEW '77 with pretty much a whole new cast and somewhat of a new sound. The remnants of Bossa Nova are buried in this release...The cut "Real Thing" was a favorite of mine when it received air-play on the radio (back in 1978!)... I still prefer the sound of the original Brasil '77, however the only way to get their music is through collector's or on auction sites...I still recommend this release, but prefer the older '66/'77 sound...if you want to complete your collection, then definitely buy it! The sound quality is excellent!
