I love the Bosa Nova sound, and Brazil '66 was the best. I play this CD contantly and never tire of it. Some younger generation music lovers are really starting to listen and appreciate what Sergio Mendes brought us in the sixties. This CD is a nice combination of their music and I highly recommend it.

While it would be nice to have Brasil '65 in CD format, this album is close enough to satisfy me. The only difference I detected was a minor change in phrasing in the song "So Nice."

Very refreshing trip back in time -- still relevant and wonderful to listen to today. The sounds of Sergio and his group are timeless--"sooo nice".

Brazil'65 DIDN'T HAVE ANY HITS...

It is fair to say that the material contained on this album is pleasing enough to listen to,and maybe,in Brazil, these sides were local hits(although this is doubtful),but the fact of the matter remains that it was not until Mendes put together Brazil'66 and put out albums on the A & M label that he actually had hit records...To say the these are"greatest hits" is to be deliberately deceptive...These are early sides, recorded when Mendes and his band were local artists..Sure,they sound similiar to his later, hit sides, but, afterall,it was essentially the same band with the same personel...So if you actually remember any of these obscure sides,or if you are a Mendes completist, this is something that you will want to own,HOWEVER,if you are looking for the artist at his peak then fast-forward to BRAZIL'66,and there you will find the real"greatest hits"...

I was 15 when I discovered "Sergio Mendes & Brazil 65". I'd never heard of Sergio Mendes, but there was something about the cover that intrigued me. This was the beginning of a love afair with Brazilian music that has never faded over the years. I played the heck out of this record. I still have it, battered cover and all in my collection. After the dawn of CD's I often looked for it in record stores, but I never found it. What a jewel to discover here! (I only wish it had the original cover.) After 36 years it has lost none of its beauty and power.

The sophisticated sound of Brasil '66 is instantly recognizable on every track. The title track out sold the Beatles version and together with Scarborough Fair went Top 20!
The soaring vocal harmonies of Lani Hall and Karen Philipp, coupled with the sexy, sultry arrangements (which are a trade mark of Sergio Mendes) make for spine tingling easy listening.
Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas is a fan and his teaming with Sergio Mendes on the recent Timeless will hopefully bring Brasil '66/'77/'86/'88 etc to a new generation.

The best selling Sergio Mendes album and for good reason
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

The Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 formula on "Fool on the Hill" was quite simple. Take pop hits like the title track by the Beatles and "Scarborough Fair" by Simon & Garfunkle, add a bossa nova rhythm and some lavish string accompaniment by Dave Grusin to Mendes on the piano and the vocals by Lani Hall, and you have some easy listening hits. "Fool on the Hill" followed "Look Around," giving Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 two solid albums in 1968 (please, do not revive the debate over why it was not Brasil '68), although I have a slight preference for this collection. The reason is that why this album hooks you with the covers, both of which charted in the Top 20, it is the original compositions that you end up loving. The two best on this album are "Casa Forte" and "Upa, Neguinho," which are as fine as any of the group's original sons as they ever recorded. In the Sixties this was the sound of international music and the opening of the door for pretty much all of the Latin American recording artists who came afterwards. "Fool on the Hill" was the best selling album by Sergio Mendes, although a large measure of the credit might be due not to the music but rather the cover, which folded out to show the group at a gorgeous sunset...sitting on top of a nude woman. Ah, to be in Rio at Carnival time...

"Fool on the Hill" is my favorite album by "Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66." If you like Brazilain-Latin music you will love this. Actually I think it's a better album than their "Greatest Hits." It is a real shame that the music industry doesn't promote music like this anymore. The music is full of soul, a very creative and innovative effort. It's just priceless.

I fell in love with Sergio Mendes & Brasil66 back in the day, because the music was fresh and different from the Soul and R&B that was usually on the Radio or Stereo... Anyways, listening to "Brasileiro", with the opening sounds of Carnival drums, I felt lifted. To anyone who reads this review, the only thing I can is if you know any one who has this disc, pop it in your CD, or better yet, drive and let the rhythmns take you away.

I was a fan of Sergio Mendez since his trio days, then Brazil 65, 66, etc.
So, I would say this CD is for his fans or those who want an anthology of Brazilian music.

The CD is essentially a collection of different Brazilian music forms. Personally, I rather missed his usual jazzy, Bossa Nova, or Samba style on the CD.

This release from start to finish simply blows my mind. I love the funky rhythm of "Magano." I've been listening to this tune over and over again in my iPod for two days now. I can't get enough of it. If someone comes across the lyrics to "Magano", PLEASE let me know.

Who could take the music of the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and other great artists of the 60's and improve on it. Answer -- Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66. If you are like me and older than fifty, then this CD contains all that you need to travel back in time and experience the wonderful moments of your teenage summers. If you are younger, then sit back and pour yourself a margarita and imagine you are on a terrace of a swank hotel in Nassau. This music is forever. Most CDs have only a few songs worth the purchase price. All the songs here are great. The music is so smooth and the female voices are so clear. Included is the less known Chove Chuva (Constant Rain) with a sitar!
