I took a chance and bought this album. What a welcome suprise! Don't let the cover fool you, this is a collection of outstanding
and heartfelt jazz. From upbeat New Orleans style, to the soulful strains of the blues, this is a full plate of clarinet-led
quartet gold. What a tone! What a glissado!
What music!
I'm not an audiophile, so I won't discuss the technical merits of this album, but it sounds great to me!

Every time you play this album, the exhuberant music screams Brasil!!!
You can picture yourself walking on Ipanema beach singing Mas Que Nada.
This is your typical Sergio Mendes album (which by typical I mean superb), full of percussions, keyboards, vocal assemblies, and that ability to encapsule what Brasil is in a simple disc.
His guests for this musical treasure, are amazing; check the list:
- Sergio Mendes / Keyboards
- Carlos Vega / Drums
- Paul Jackson Jr. / Guitars
- Jeff Porcaro / Drums
- Alan Pasqua / Synthesizers
- Nathan East / Bass Guitar
- Alex Acuna / Drums
- Dori Caymmi / Acoustic Guitar
- Paulinho Da Costa / Percussions
- Gracinha Leporace / Vocals
- Dan Huff / Guitars
- Kevyn Lettau / Vocals
- Robbie Buchanan / Keyboards
- Portinho / Percussions
- Jimmy Johnson / Bass Guitar
- Luis Conte / Percussions
- Joe Pizzulo / Vocals
- Vinnie Colaiuta / Drums
etc.
etc.
Don't miss out on this "now classic" album by one of the best musical embassadors that Brasil's ever given.
Classics like (Mas Que Nada),(The Island - song that inspired Barbara Streisand to also perform Ivan Lins' song), (Night Life) and (Cinnamon and Clove) aired heaviliy during the late 80's and early 90's, and the music still sounds so fresh like it was recorded this year.
P.S. One more thing, this Amazon page doesn't reflect the tracks:
1. Sarara (Bring me the Sunlight)
2. Mas Que Nada
3. Some Morning
4. Nightlife
5. Cinnamon and Clove (Cravo E Canela)
6. Balafon
7. Surrender
8. Keep This Heart
9. Toucan's Dance (Instrumental)
10. The Island

Seductive sixties sizzle!

The sophisticated sound of Brasil '66 is instantly recognizable on every track. The title track out sold the Beatles version
and together with Scarborough Fair went Top 20!
The soaring vocal harmonies of Lani Hall and Karen Philipp, coupled with the sexy, sultry arrangements (which are a trade mark of Sergio Mendes) make for spine tingling easy listening.
Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas is a fan and his teaming with Sergio Mendes on the recent Timeless will hopefully bring Brasil '66/'77/'86/'88 etc to a new generation.

The Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 formula on "Fool on the Hill" was quite simple. Take pop hits like the title track by the
Beatles and "Scarborough Fair" by Simon & Garfunkle, add a bossa nova rhythm and some lavish string accompaniment by Dave
Grusin to Mendes on the piano and the vocals by Lani Hall, and you have some easy listening hits. "Fool on the Hill" followed
"Look Around," giving Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 two solid albums in 1968 (please, do not revive the debate over why it was
not Brasil '68), although I have a slight preference for this collection. The reason is that why this album hooks you with
the covers, both of which charted in the Top 20, it is the original compositions that you end up loving. The two best on
this album are "Casa Forte" and "Upa, Neguinho," which are as fine as any of the group's original sons as they ever recorded.
In the Sixties this was the sound of international music and the opening of the door for pretty much all of the Latin American
recording artists who came afterwards. "Fool on the Hill" was the best selling album by Sergio Mendes, although a large measure
of the credit might be due not to the music but rather the cover, which folded out to show the group at a gorgeous sunset...sitting
on top of a nude woman. Ah, to be in Rio at Carnival time...

I got this CD on a whim and when I played it was completely awe struck. I can't after hearing imagine going another day without
it. It is truly a work of art that will last the proverbial "generations".

"Fool on the Hill" is my favorite album by "Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66." If you like Brazilain-Latin music you will love
this. Actually I think it's a better album than their "Greatest Hits." It is a real shame that the music industry doesn't
promote music like this anymore. The music is full of soul, a very creative and innovative effort. It's just priceless.

So, pretty much the tracks are the same, with the only TINY exception that this is a true collectible; so if you collect Sergio Mendes' CDs like thousands of us do, you've got to have this one in your collection.
