A trans-continental indie rock bossa twist

Fun stuff. This mostly-European, mostly-French, indie-rock tribute album has several highlights, including a witty rendition of "Girl From Ipanema" by Japan's Pizzicato 5, and a healthy dose of Franco-fied versions of Jobim's bossa nova standards. Anyone approaching this disc who is familiar with the plenitude of reverential Brazilian versions of these old classics will be struck by the varied and refreshingly new takes on such well-worn material. Swedish rocker Ray Wonder gets major points for his playful, lavishly layered, electric-guitar heavy version of "One Note Samba"; similarly the surf/spy guitars on Tango & Lee Marr's "Agua de Beber" are an unlikely and quite pleasant twist, and Sean O'Hagan (Stereolab, High Llamas) gets in some nice licks as well. Interestingly enough, the British contributions to this project more often than not fall a bit flat -- although Stuart Moxham has a tasteful turn, other tracks by the Walkabouts and John Cunningham are less interesting. In the main, though, this disc is full of rewarding material. If you're ready for a little playful tweaking on the Jobim canon, check this one out!

This tribute to Jobim by young stars coming from Japan, France, the UK and the United States is very interesting indeed. It is a fusion of modern styles with Jobim's beautiful songs. All the evergreens are there. It goes too far to say that all tracks are equally succesful, but it is a joy anyway, with many highlights, including a beautiful French contribution in Les Eaux De Mars.

It is for young people of today a good introduction to the classical Jobim music and for all long time lovers of the Brazilian sound an interesting diversion.

Antonio Carlos Jobim The Unknown... Whoa!

Buy Antonio Carlos Jobim The Unknown.

The recordings are very intimate. They were made in his basement!

The music was put together by a special group of people at a special time in Jobim's life.

The liner notes and pictures are remarkable.

I love the photo of Jobim sitting and reading in his living room with sun flooding his vaulted ceiling.

Reclining father figure.

A welcome addition to the Jobim catelogue.

There are two titles available with the very same material. This 'Unknown Jobim' is the American issue of 'Inedito' as issued originally in Brazil. Both are available here@Amazon and the quality is the same, so check prices for your convenience.

Happens that Jobim recorded a two-set album exclusively to be distributed as a gift by a Brazilian corporation. What an act!

Needless to say this double set was an object of high desire by all of his fans in Brazil for many years.

This is the double CD issue of that album which contains 24 standards composed by Tom Jobim. That's the reason why its title is 'Inedito', meaning 'unissued'.

The title 'Unknown' is not appropriate because all material is quite known in Brazil or even in the USA just with new renditions by Jobim himself with a small group.

No matter, it is a very great album though not Jobim's top of the top.

An old school fan of The Maestro, Ive recently reconnected /rekindled my ACJ mania of my high school yrs. An exchange student from Brazil was one of my HS buds and we discussed and enjoyed this stuff decades ago. In memory of Keeko (my bud) I searched and found this gem. " Chege De Saudade" transports me from my Atlanta metro abode to Ipanema Beach and I can see my lovely spouse in knee deep water ,with the other beauties..as the maestro raises his hands and says..Um !dos! tres!...and the music lifts me and flies us away on a South Atlantic breeze, the joy of carnival...the energy, the color and all the resplendent imagery of Brazil...it all passes before my eyes and I can imagine.

A must for all ACJ fans old n young.....It fills your senses and remains with you for days n nights. I just played 2 ballgames at 3rd base and it followed me , haunted and moved me beyond myself and persisted..I pushed it away and it hung on and said....No!!!!!

Enjoy!

Jobim made this intimate recording together with his family. Among all his albums he liked this one the most: they had enough money for the recording to realize all that he wanted. The first half of the CD is happy, the second a bit more melancholic. Once you start to listen this album you can't get the music out oy your had, it takes you in right away. The melody is subtle, the rhythm is pulsating. The female chorus is like a never-ending swell. A must for Jobim fans.

Jobim has a very special musical signature and this production is representative of his style, including variations within the key of the melody, harmonies, and other musical traits and characteristics comprising his ¨musical personality¨. Albeit this is not music for every or any ¨ear¨ and taste, I deem this production worthy given my attribution of musical, ethnical and collector's value.
