Antonio Carlos Jobim Music

The recent release by the Jobim family of this Tom Jobim live concert recorded some 10 years ago in the honour of the Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moreas is a true "must have" for all those who have come to admire the work of Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moreas. For those who are only vaguely familiar with this work, I would argue that this is the occassion to get acquainted better (be prepared though...it'll also get under your skin !) Tom Jobim, together with members of the Banda Nova, at his best ! The album contains the very highlights of the so productive partnership between the former diplomat turned poet Vinicius de Moreas and the giant of Brazilian music. Performed are -obviously- the famous Garota de Ipanema, but also the Carta ao Tom (including the amusing reply message indicating that no more view from the window of the appartment at Rua nascimento Silva 107 in Rio -where most of the songwriting took place- at the Corcovado exists), the Sonata de Adeus and many more comparable jewels. The recording quality is outstanding and the emotional atmosphere of the concert (recorded at the Canecao in Rio de Janeiro) comes across very well. I can only hope that the Jobim family will release more of this kind of material in the near future.

This is a great Concert from beginning to end. There are three fantastic pianist and Ron Carter proves he is still the man on the Acoustic bass. It is impossible to pick a bad Jobim tune, because he never learned how to write a tune that did not sound great. Buy this Dvd, BUT before you play it, get some popcorn, food drinks or whatever it is you like to eat or drink, then sit back and enjoy the show over and over again.

Lisa meets Jobim. Simply perfect! Flawless vocals. not over produced tracks. My favorite cut is the obscure - Two Kites (featuring Daniel Jobim). Daniel sounds like his dad. Got lucky because this album is available in Manila for only 350 pesos or $8!!!

This is an expensive collection of very off-beat and unusual covers of Antonio Carlos Jobim songs performed by obscure European bands you've never heard of. This CD was apparently produced in Japan, and there is very little English in the liner notes to tell you much about the project.

Thus, we have weird collection of 21 of Jobim's most loved songs (listed below) produced by some mysterious Euro/Japanese joint project.

What to say about it?

I give it a 4-star ("I like it") rating. Each of the songs is performed with care and skill and great respect for the composition itself. These are very inventive and original arrangements and orchestrations (especially O Morro Nao Tem Vez). Sometimes the vocalists are not very strong, but in nearly all cases they have soul and are quite listenable (only the vocalist on "Modhina" didn't work for me). The vocal are sung in English, French, and Portuguese.

If you are Jobim connoisseur with some curiosity and toleration for the offbeat and unusual, and if you can afford the heft price amazon is charging for this CD, I give it a strong recommendation. If you are just browsing for your first Jobim anthology, this is not a good choice for you (instead I'd recommend "The Man From Ipanema", ASIN= B0000046XI)

Just so you know where I am coming from: I am a big fan of Antonio Carlos Jobim. I have many of his own CDs, several anthologies, and dozens and dozens of CDs from other artists covering his tunes. IMO, Jobim was one of the 20th century's great composers, and he deserves to be part of the pop pantheon along side greats like Porter, Berlin, Kern, Gershwin, Lennon-McCartney, Carmichael, etc. I listen to jazz, pop, rock, electronica, world, and pop-opera.
