Bossa Nova & Jazz, a Great Fusion Album!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-28
Bossa Nova started in Brazil in the late `50s. The "First Generation" included Antonio Carlos (Tom) Jobim (1927-1994), Joao Gilberto and Vinicius de Moraes as their main artists. Their themes were composed focusing on "Love, Smiles & Flowers" and greatly influenced Latin America's music and even USA's jazz composers.

The music of the present CD was recorded in 1970 when Bossa Nova was already firmly mixing with Jazz and conquering a huge melodic space at USA.
The original recording of "Tide" was done at Van Gelder studios at the same time with "Stone Flower" employing the same instrumentalists; actually a subset of them for "Stone Flower".
Tom Jobim (piano, electric piano, guitar and composer of all but one of the musical pieces in the CD) join and mix his efforts with arranger Eumir Deodato (1943) to give the audience an outstanding album.
A vast number of gifted instrumentalists accompany Jobim in the different tracks, we may single amongst them multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal and trombonist Urbie Green.

Each musical piece in this CD is a great example of soft fusion between Jazz & Bossa Nova, most remarkable, IMHO, are "Tide", "Carinhoso" and the rock-samba "Rockanalia".

This CD is especially commendable for a romantic "suave" evening or when you want to relax undisturbed. Enjoy!

Even though the music on this CD was recorded in 1967, it still "works" in this present time. Jobim was truly ahead of his time - he was a genius, like Mozart. The music on this CD ranges from the most beautiful and lyrical song you can hear ("Sue Ann")to a totally groovin' and movin" song ("Remember"- totally addicting- you will play it over and over)to the most rocking and rolling cuts (4 versions, 4 cuts,of "Tema Jazz")you can imagine Jobim could compose! What a variety! You can play this as background music to any activity you are engaged in ( I play it while I work - it is very energizing!)and also play it in your computer - great music to keyboard by! Definitely worth buying - I got two - one for my husband, who is working away from home, and one for myself. You will not regret this purchase.

Jobim's music is very elegant and classy. It can be also a background on any activities - you will feel comfortable and relaxed. "Tide" is my favourite instrumental album.

One of the best and it will be one of your favorites, too.

I first bought TIDE on vinyl, shortly after it was released, already being a fan of Jobim. I played the grooves off of it. Now, I have it in CD. It's doubtful anyone in the world has played and listened to this album more than I have over the years. The appeal is threefold: First, Jobim's music is relentlessly upbeat and mood elevating. There is a happiness and joy which never fails to make your outlook on life better. Second, the music is relaxing. It cuts through tension and removes the stress and aggravation of everyday living. Third, it's rhythmic. Brazilian beats are recognized as the most expressive and soul-moving in the world. If these rhythms don't get your body subtly moving, you'll need life supports! If you don't know Jobim or haven't listened to Brazilian Bossa Nova, start here! Jobim is the undisputed, heavyweight champion of the genre and THIS album is at the absolute top of his work. Do NOT miss it!

Tom Canta Vinicius: Ao Vivo, Looking for Jobim & de Moraes.

OK. We've all connected with Vinicius de Moraes on one level or another. An Aunt or Uncle, Grandpa, Mom or Dad, or an older brother or sister, someone turned us onto the Artist.

Right?

But how many of us have a good solid Vinicius de Moraes CD collection?

It's time to retire our ancestor's old Greatest Hits.

I have looked through the Amazon Vinicius de Moraes CD headings and there are alot of titles to consider purchasing.

Tom Canta Vinicius: Ao Vivo is a nice way to honor Vinicius and Jobim by buying and ordering some welcomed new product.

I don't know about you, but intoning the name, Vinicius de Moraes, is a religious experience, the picture on the CD's front cover and the live recording border on holy.

Greatest Hits CD's have their place, but there's nothing like a tight knit group of family and friends singing and performing songs of deep significance or relevance.

I listen to Tom Canta Vinicius: Ao Vivo in the bathtub.

Light a candle for your loved ones. Honor your ancestry.

Honor the pretty person next to you. Leave some hot water for them!

Buy Vinicius de Moraes CD's for Birthdays, Weddings, and Anniversaries.

Drink the Philospher's Wine. Innoculate the Music Trade.

Tom Canta Vinicius: Ao Vivo is a good start.

I give it 5 Stars, a stellar performance.

BEAUTIFUL SONGS -- WONDERFUL PERFORMANCES

I can basically only agree with the review below -- this is a well-recorded, lovingly performed tribute concert to Tom Jobim's long-time friend and collaborator Vincius de Moraes. Many of the classic songs are included in the program -- 'Insensatez', 'Felicidade', 'Samba de Carioca', 'Garota de Ipanema' (and the version here blows away ANY of the 'elevator music' interpretations you most likely have endured) -- and the participants are perfect, possibly the musicians most sympathetic to his music with whom the Master ever worked. The recording -- and live recordings are always a bit of a risk to the buyer -- is clear and quiet, the applause from the audience only audible between the tracks. This recording aptly captures Jobim's art -- and his love for it. It's a must-have for anyone who enjoys the best that Brazilian music has to offer -- his work is the pinnacle of the form.

The Morelenbaums -- Paula and Jacques, on vocals and cello, respecetively -- and Paolo Jobim, on guitar and vocals, are, of course, three-fourths of the incredible Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, whose recording of a couple of years ago, dedicated to Tom Jobim's music, has become a modern classic in its own right. They are joined here by the fine work of Danilo Caymmi on flute and vocals. The support these wonderful musicians gently give to Tom's piano and vocals show their love and respect for this giant -- his contributions to modern music will, I feel certain, be eternally honored for their timeless beauty.

A lovely and very pleasant live tribute by "Tom" Jobim

Recorded live in Brazil in 1990 and not released in the U.S. until now, "Tom Canta Vinicius" (translate "Tom Sings Vinicius") is Tom Jobim's tribute to his songwriting partner Vincinius de Moraes. While de Moraes was not nearly as famous as Mr. Jobim, his standing as a bossa nova original is secure, having helped pen several of the best-loved songs of that genre. Many of those were performed in this concert, including my favorite bossa tune, "Insensatez," one of the most beautiful songs of all time. Jobim was accompanied by his son Paulo, Danilo Caymmi and the Morelenbaums. In fact, Paula Morelenbaum sung most of the lead vocals - and did a magnificent job. Tom sang a few numbers alone or in duet with Paula, in his sometimes thin or fragile-sounding voice (but not really a problem, because you can feel his love for the songs). The sound quality for the recording is excellent - intimate and natural, like they're playing in your living room.
