True classicReview Date: 2003-05-08
I especially liked the different recordings and interpretations in CD 3. Not to mention the "bonus" at the end of the last track on the same CD. The bonus is some "dry" studio recordings of Águas de Março. If there wasn't for 'retransfer' of analogue tape, I'd swear that the girl was sitting right next to me.
Recordings and mixing is different on each track (after all, it's a compilation), but you can hear which have been recorded with the same team. Some tracks are "extreme stereo", which was popular in the early days of "stereo", therefore there is not much sense of real space around performers. But that's a 'trade mark' of the old style. If you want audiophile grade stuff, buy Ana Caram recordings from Chesky records.
A true classic, that makes my eyes wet every time. Thank you, Jobim.
Everything you'll ever need from Jobim is here and more...Review Date: 2003-12-26
Let me tell you one thing, this collection is a must if you like this genre. If you're a hardcore fan, you'll surely want more, but this contains all the essencials from Jobim and Joao Gilberto, and much much more.
The first disc is simply the "big hits" (if it may be called so) of Jobim and company (featuring Stan Getz on many).
The second disc has the best cuts of Jobim's solo works "Tide" and "Wave". I've bought both seperately, they are both amazing, and this one simply has the finest cuts out of them. These cuts are so beautiful and emotional that surely words cannot express them. The former reviewer who said this disc was nice listening to while doing some housework hasn't obviously given this any serious listening.
The third disc has many rare versions of famous Jobim works, and in addition to that some of those works in their original forms such as Desafinado, Corcovado and Vivo Sonhando. I believe this disc would be of most interest to serious fans of the genre.
All in all, this is a great collection, and should be sufficient for most people since it really captivates the best moments of Jobim in particular and Bossa Nova in general.
A best buy in my opinion for anyone who likes this genre, ranging from amatuer to serious listeners.

Antonio Carlos Jobim Meus Primeiros Passos E Compassos, Sets A New Precedence Licensing And Packaging Hard To Find RaritiesReview Date: 2008-04-21
There are breathtaking pictures of their first album covers to come out in the 1950's.
But, how do I get these timeless recordings out of the hands of staunch Record Collectors and into my possession.
Looking for these albums before the internet would've been relegated to musty old used Record stores laden with Cigar smoke.
And in my case, two continents seperating me and my dream to shop exotic Brazilian Flea Markets for out of print gems.
Good luck.
They've transcended, most of them loved to death.
And when CD's came out, there was the issue, why possess an expensive musty old album when a CD quality recording is much more desirable.
No wear or tear from the record needle.
These days I'm perfectly happy shopping Amazon and discover what gems pop up, their engines have produced some incredible results.
There are four to five albums that are some of the best compilations of Jobim's formidable years.
They're on two different Record Labels, El Records and their subsidiary Cherry Red Records based in the United Kingdom, and Revivendo, Parana- Brasil.
I'd like to shake the Manufacturer's hand for honoring our Composer so.
Look no further than Amazon to strike paydirt.
Revivendo's, Antonio Carlos Jobim Meus Primeiros Passos E Compassos alongside their box set Tom Jobim raros compassos top the list of touted collectables.
How did Revivendo manage to get the licensing for over a 100 very hard to find vintage tracks?
It makes me shake at the knees to own such a formidable collection for a small penance.
Amazon is up on what's rare, and looks very hard for a Seller.
Last summer, it was touch and go if I was going to be able to purchase Meus Primeiros Passos E Compassos.
Don't give up.
Put in your request, I have found the turnaround time isn't very long.
I can't think of another compilation Like Meus Primeiros Passos E Compassos that has faithfully catelogue all of Jobim's initial recordings, beginning April 1953 with Incerteza, memorable indeed, and present each song, one by one, in the chronological order it came out month by month, year to year.
A goldmine of Jobim's early material from 1953 to 1956.
23 tracks, over 75 minutes in length feauturing over 25 popular recording Artist.
After careful study, Meus Primeiros Passos E Compassos has 7 tracks that are difficult to find anywhere else, they are, Incerteza, Pengando Em Voce', Faz Uma Semana, Teu Castigo, Sonho Desfeito, and to really get the party going the brassy Pe' Grande, and rowdy Luar E Batucada.
Jobim would've been modest and advise the consumer to save their pennies, but Revivendo is responsible for getting a number of these timeless recordings out of hock.
Helping to insure our Composer's good standing well into the next century.
The packaging is superb, the artwork printed on top the CD has a collage of young Jobim offset with one of his hand written scores.
Rio de Janeiro's Golden Boy.

This CD version, released by Warner in 1994, reproduces the original cover of the 1966 LP issue on the Elenco label. However, it adds the correct info concerning arrangers and musicians, mentioned in the liner cover.
It features two Jobim compositions:
Samba Torto - aka Pardon My English (Jobim/Aloysio de Oliveira) e
Eu Preciso de Você - aka Hurry Up and Away (Jobim/Aloysio de Oliveira), both arranged by Gaya."
These two tracks were included in the compilation Composer (with entire works The Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim and A Certain Mr. Jobim, plus additional unreleased material from last one's sessions).
Personnel that figure in the album are: Lindolfo Gaya (arranger & conductor), Eumir Deodato (piano), Sérgio Barroso (bass), Edson Machado (drums), Oscar Castro-Neves (acoustic guitar), Mauricio Einhorn (harmonica) and Jorge Ferreira da Silva (alto sax & flute).
Many people have bought this album by mistake. Even thought it is worth the money.
