I think this is the CD that arrived from Argentina in a paper envelope - not cardboard as the other 5 CDs were. When opened, the
lid of the container was broken at the hinge, maybe only to be expected because of the lack of toughness for international
shipping. Plays okay, though.

I have a lovely bit of history that seems to have slipped through the cracks.
Right after World War II, there were two kinds of phonograph turntables, little portable turntables were popular with teenagers, big turntables cost more, they were like investing in a piece of furniture.
As a result, fancy retail stores arranged their big HI-FI's next to the ovens and washer and dryers for sale!
At the end of the aisle, next to all the appliances were a couple rows of LP phonograph records.
My family moved to the Pacific Northwest during the early 60's, east of Seattle over the Floating Bridge in a little town called Lake Hills, Bellevue, it was a relatively new part of town catering to young families and a growing economy.
There were only a couple of fine retail stores that stocked records, record stores didn't appear on the Eastside untill after 1970.
I purchased the LP Antonio Carlos Jobim Wave in the summer of 1971, with my lawnmower money, when I was twelve.
One of my distinct vivid impressions of the early 70's is going next to the fancy washer and dryer Appliance section and admire the record slick of Antonio Carlos Jobim Stoneflower.
Jobim's suit and tie and well groomed look made a big impression on me.
Stoneflower helped define the early 70's. It was a big deal when it appeared on CD.
It's nice to see Wave, Stoneflower and Tide still register with the public.
To this day, whenever I study the front cover of Antonio Carlos Jobim Stoneflower, I'm driven to set aside a little nest egg to purchase my next Jobim.
The songs on Stoneflower are very delicate, they display great mastery,
a nice way to unwind.

The only complaint here is that the title should inform you that this is not Jobim recording, nor Banda Nova [members of
Jobim's family with the Morelenbaum husband and wife]. The Tropical Orchestra does make beautiful music and festures great
vocalists. It should name them but for these inexpensive cd's liner notes never appear. Personally, I have several cds of
the Tropical Orchestra doing Samba-even one of Beattles music! They are a great musical group who perform all kinds of authentic
Latin music-Boleros and Mambos!

The music of Antonio Carlos Jobim reaches a new dimension in feeling when interpreted by the "BRAZILIAN TROPICAL ORCHESTRA".
This marvelous strings and brass orchestra with a brazilian typical chorus will re-explore the bossa-nova and romantic samba
for you creating a real "saudade" mood while you listen. If you close your eyes listening to this CD you will find yourself
walking on the sands of Copacabana Beach in Rio or perhaps the seashore in Bahia. What an album! What an orchestra! If you
like Jobim and Brazilian music, do not miss this one!

Minimal Jazz Content

The way people have been talking about this score, from the reviews to the liner notes, you'd think it was a stylistic counterpart
to "Checkmate." In truth, there is minimal jazz or even pseudo-jazz content in this score. It is mostly orchestral with
occasional jazzy touches, such as vibes or sax, but it's hardly a return to his days as Johnny Williams (as some have suggested).
And the handful of tunes by the likes of Sinatra, Dusty, and Getz/Gilberto are readily available elsewhere in more appropriate
settings. On its own terms, the score is certainly pleasant, but it's hardly a "jazz score" as defined by the likes of Mancini,
Lalo Schifrin, Johnny Mandel, Kenyon Hopkins, and others.
Outstanding!

well that you will wonder how one man was creative enough to think of it!

The opening theme is the coolest ever. It has that jazzy, suspenseful, space-age groove that takes you back to the early 60's
era portrayed in the movie.
Once I discovered it was done by John Williams, things started to click. The arrangement and themes actually go back way before he was famous. Back to an era he may not want you to remember. Back when he was known simply as "Johnny" Williams.
First, notice the melody and pace of the creeping marimbas and bubbling flutes. Next, catch a repeat of the old Sci-Fi, TV Fairy-Tale known as "LOST IN SPACE." Listen for the incidental, suspense-scene music throughout. Did you catch the composer's name in the credits?
Bingo!(and still very cool)!

I loved the movie and now the music. I think it is one of the most original soundtracks that John Williams has ever done.
The Jazz in this music is so peaceful and lighthearted. This soundtrack should be on any music lovers shelf. In my book, this
music is a classic film score.

This CD is a welcome compilation to have because the albums that make up its tracks are currently only available as expensive
imports (if they are still even in print). Tracks from "The Wonderful World of Antonio Carlos Jobim", "A Certain Mr. Jobim"
and "Love, Strings, & Jobim" are here, along with at least two previously unreleased tracks. I can't say enough about Claus
Ogerman's arrangements and Nelson Riddle's are also very excellent. These albums which Jobim recorded in the U.S. before
his "Wave" LP are among his best efforts. There are both vocals and instrumentals on this CD, something to please a fan
of either. Don't miss getting this one!

I love Jobim dearly, but like the liner notes point out, he's not a natural singer. The feeling he gives his songs can be
incredibly sublime, yet often the quality of his voice and his inability to always sing on-key bother me. Add to that a
few commercially-minded and annoying tracks like "Surfboard" and "Bonita," and you get a album that true bossa nova lovers
will only enjoy about half of. If anything, buy it for the wonderful performances of "So Tinha de Ser Com Voce," "Useless
Landscape" and "A Felicidade."

This album includes tracks from THREE other albums: THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM (1965); LOVE, STRING AND JOBIM
(1966) and A CERTAIN MR. JOBIM (1967)... plus four unreleased songs recorded for this last album.
Here we find a young and vibrant Jobim during one of his most creative phases with many, many classics like SHE'S A CARIOCA, SURFBOARD, BONITA, SAMBA DO AVIÃO, DESAFINADO, USELESS LANDSCAPE, SÓ TINHA DE SER VOCÊ and DINDI.
Beautifully arranged by Nelson Riddle (tracks 1-12), Gaya and Eumir Deodato (13-14) and Claus Ogerman (15-28), these songs show the unforgettable genius of Tom Jobim along with fellow composers Vinícius de Morais, Aloysio de Oliveira and Dolores Duran. These recordings are truly among the best examples of the best Brazilian music ever written!
In fact, these were the songs that really made of Brazilian music one of the worldwide creative quality references is has been ever since.
It is impossible not to feel the musical uniqueness of songs like DINDI and SURFBOARD. After listening to these songs for all my life I still get an incredible sense of amazement thinking how can someone write such beautiful music. Well... the truth is nobody really can - except legendary figures like Jobim and Vinícius who were probably super humans... because these songs are larger than life.
One final note: American audiences have got used to hear English versions of Jobim and Vinícius' songs. Although most of them are great, none can match the beauty of the original lyrics who (many times) are very different from the English versions.
Ever thought about learning Portuguese? Well... here's a great excuse to start today: Brazilian Music.

I really enjoyed this CD, but please note that these are not all Jobim songs. Rather, they're mostly Stan Getz and Luiz Bonfa
songs... literally. And they have been given different names. It should also be known that all of the songs are on a double
cd which someone else here had mentioned.
The music is hard to explain, but it is a very good of course (Getz, Bonfa, etc.), as if it is played romantically on an older styled record player. The sound quality is hardly to be envied. It sounds as if a tape recorder was placed against a speaker as the record played (don't laugh. That might have been how this cd was made). But that quiet sound takes you back into time, almost imagining a honeymoon on a private beach.
Nice CD. And for the price, it is very good to add to the collection.

The only reason this CD is not four stars is because it is only half of a double CD set. Other than that, it is incredibly
romantic and nostalgic. It reminds you of a quiet sunset on a beach with the love of your life. The sound quality isn't
perfect but that imperfection gives the CD charm for classic enthusiasts. It also greatly contrasts to the more popular
Jobim titles. This'll definitely get your mouth wet but if you can, find the double CD.

I doubt if Jobim had a lot to do with this album. Most of the numbers on this cd can be heard either on the Luis Bonfa album
'Composer of Black Orpheus Sings and Plays' or the Bonfa/Getz album 'Jazz Samba Encore'. And most of the compositions on
this record are also usually credited to Bonfa, but with different titles. As far as I can tell the only two 'real' Jobim
numbers on the cd are 'Janelas Abertas' and 'Estrada Branca, which are featured here in 'okay' versions. But all in all,
if you are interested in hearing this music, you might be better off buying the two abovementioned albums, since they have
a much better sound quality.

COMPILATION OF 1970'S JOBIM RECORDINGS, A GOOD FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER THE INITIAL BOSSA NOVA CRAZE, BUT NEVERTHELESS DAZZLING
IN ITS' TIMELESSNESS AND BEAUTY. WONDERFUL MUSIC, A GREAT CD OF CLASSIC RECORDINGS. BRAZILIAN MUSIC HAD A BIG RESURGENCE IN
THE 70'S WITH THE EMERGENCE OF STARS LIKE MILTON NASCIMENTO, WHICH FOCUSED A LOT OF ATTENTION TO THIS GENRE OF MUSIC. A VERY,
MELLOW, MELODIC, AND ENJOYABLE CD.

Quincy Jones once said trying to compose and record a #1 hit is like trying to bottle lightning, but in the end, you have
to leave room for God to walk through.
No doubt, there's alot of give and take involved with the music industry.
During the late 70's, Miucha and Antonio Carlos Jobim joined forces to assemble a string of hits that made a big impact.
Echoes Of Rio is a compilation of these timeless recordings put together by RCA, the majority of the tracks are off the 1977 Miucha and Antonio Carlos Jobim album.
Echoes Of Rio is solid gold, each song will sear into your memory cells and leave you humming with your heart pounding.
All the Hits are here, Vei Levando, Sei La' A Vida Tem Sempre Razao' and Choro De Nada...
The haunting rhythms and arrangements strike a definate accord, one of the greatest track list I've heard.
Magic.
Thank you, RCA. Thank you Miucha & Tom for a lovely set of songs!
