Remixes or not, Bebel is perfect! There is not a bad track on this disc! You will want to listen to it over and over... I do!

I adore this album. It's a cross between a vacation and a fantasy for me.
Either way, it works out.

It's definately different from what our American "remixes" are like-- which is kind of what I was expecting-- but I do like it. Great musician.

Bebel gets an electronica makeover

What is it about remixes that we typically like that didn't exist on the original? Many like the new flavor to a familiar song, the addition of more groove, the rearranging of beats, the phasing in and out of other genres like nu-jazz and spacey electronic elements that result in a complete redeux: a complete makeover if you will, new and improved shake-your-booty music results when it is successfully rearranged. Such is the case with this fine bit of bossa-nova-nu-jazz inspired electronica that features the sensual vocal stylings of Bebel Gilberto. Her of the soft as a whisper sexy musings comes across between the remix like a purring kitten; she is just too hard to resist. Originals are just that and should not be compared. Especially tasty songs include Thievery Corporations "Cada Beijo" that features soft jazzy-samba grooves that are like a sunset on Rio, the catchy "Aganju" gets a new sound that gets a hip-hop-hicup makeover for an interesting nu-groove and the Tom Middleton's Cosmos mix of "Simplemente" is a crafty reinterpretation of the original. The songs in English (7) are very nice but there is someting that is lost when Bebel switches languages , personally I prefer her offerings in Portuguese, I guess it adds to the exotic nature of her music. If you liked "Tanto Tiempo" than you probably will like these dancefloor versions. The bonus is a mini-disc that features six more dance floor remixes of the same songs with the irresitible "Aranju" getting the makeover twice. If you like Brazilian music and remixes than you will probably like this offering by six degrees that is a bargain.

I really enjoy listening to this mix of smooth Bosa Nova music. Each track has its own connection to Brazil with Bebel Gilberto as a super boost. If your new to Bossa Nova start with Tom Jobim but if your looking for j-pop sound start here. As my friends in Rio would say this CD is "legal".

Interesting Japanese bossa album featuring Bebel...

Good bossa album from '91 which, according to the cd's liner notes, was "originally planned as an instrumental album of Brazilian musicians playing songs from famous Japanese pop singer/songwriter Yumi Matsutoya". Well, Bebel Gilberto was added to the mix and the result is well, Bebel.
If you like your bossa nice and breezy, this should suit you fine.
My only major complaint is that Bebel's vocals are buried far too low in the mix throughout the album.
The production is a little heavier and not as stripped down or personal as Bebel's own albums, but nice nonetheless.

Anime fans take note: The song "Envolvida Em Ternura" (Embraced By Tenderness) is the same tune heard during the closing credits of Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service.

Highly disappointing.....

I have got to be one of the biggest Bossa Nova lovers that I know of. I live, sleep and dream about Bossa Nova. Heck, I even have named my Xbox live user name "Bossa Nova". However, this CD struck me as a huge disappointment. First of all, when I bought this I didn't realize that this was J-Pop mixed with Bossa Nova sounds. I thought it was straight Brazilian music. I like some J-Pop, which really stands for Japanese Pop. I LOVE Pizicatto Five! However the mix, doesn't mix well at all. It sounds extremely weird and I doubt I'll ever listen to this again. I'd rather listen to Bebel Gilberto on her excellent "Tanto Tempo" than listen to her singing this experimental junk!

A bit of history ...

First of all, Geraldo Pereira is a bit "unkown" even in Brazil. What can we expect abroad? However, if you like bossa nova, please pay attention to the authors of some songs that Joao Gilberto used to sing when bossa nova appeared - you'll find Geraldo Pereira there! So, consider this CD not a "bossa nova premimum" but a tribute to one of the "sources" used by Joao Gilberto, which means, one of the roots of bossa nova.

Not the Bebel of today...

Due to this CD's import status, no retailer I found listed any information on the title. If you are familiar with the Bebel of today (of Towa Tei and Brasil 2 Mil fame), wait until Six Degrees Records releases her solo album in early 2000. Geraldo Pereira plays like bossa nova on Sesame Street, and I don't recommend it -- not even for the camp value.

Well, actually...

This is not an album BY Geraldo Pereira (a 40s/50s singer who inspired Bebel's father, the legendary Joao Gilberto...) but rather a tribute TO Pereira, performed by Bebel and a fellow called Pedrinho Rodrigues... Also keep in mind that this disc was recorded (as near as I can figure) back in the 1980s, well before Bebel got into the high-tech bossatronica that you young folks seem to love so well... So in all fairness it might be appropriate to cut this disc some slack... or at least not place the same type of expectations on it as you do on her current material...

A very mediocre bossa nova album

I agree with Katie's review. I purchased this CD after hearing Bebel's excellent contributions to the "Next Stop Wonderland" soundtrack and "Brazil 2 Mil", and was very disappointed. I can't wait until her new album comes out though! While this CD is not terrible, I haven't had the urge to listen to it more than once or twice.

Bebel Gilberto, daughter of João Gilberto (Brazil's best-loved musical son and one of the creators of the bossanova style of jazz), is creating a worldwide stir of her own as she brings bossa style and substance into the 21st century. If you haven't heard her the album Tanto Tempo, from which the original version of "Sem Contenção" is taken, go do so and then come back. You'll like it.

Back now? Nice classy mixes befitting a member of the bossanova royalty. The One Rascal Remix takes the original and grafts it onto the New York House DNA strand. The Ugo & Sanz Remix takes a more Ibiza-styled approach to the track, but both are pure dance floor. The acapella track is beautiful but useful only for club mixing.

Bebel Rawks!

This CD is a great addition to Tanto Tempo, Bebel's debut release. The three high energy remixes on "Sem Contencao" frame Bebel's vocal style in a slightly different way than on "Tanto Tempo," and it makes for marvelous listening!! Even before NPR's interview with Bebel, I had played her new CD on my Jazz show, and the phones lit up....Bebel's great, and this new remix CD has to be in your collection!
