This is not the original Stan Getz version of "Girl from Ipanema" that you are looking for. For that, and for many other fine
Astrud Gilberto performances, you must track down a copy of "Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour" which is a greatest hits collection
of her sixties work, with good liner notes.

I'd heard The Girl from Ipanema (another recording) and decided to purchase it. Should have done my research. This high
pitched, strained version hurts the ears. I couldn't get it to the cd store for trade in fast enough.

I'm the greatest fan of Astrud and was really looking forward to getting this CD, but I was really surprised, when I listened
to it. Jazzy bossa nova style that I love with Astrud very much is something that this CD isn't about. Disco remixes, I'd
say. Only positive thing is her voice, which can not be unchanged. If you are looking for an essential Astrud Gilberto CD,
than don't buy this one, but Sliver collection, jazz samba, Verve Collection or many others, that are the best. But if you
are collector, than maybe this CD would find a place on your shelf for collectory reasons. Anyway, Astrud is the greatest!
But five stars for the Puppy Song

Yikes! What a poor CD. Mostly disco, and bad disco at that. As others have pointed out, if you want the famous bossa nova
version of "Girl from Ipanema" with Astrud's singing and the Stan Getz sax solo, try Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour CD. Amazon
has it, but don't get confused, apparently in the samples Amazon sampled the 30 seconds of the song with Astrud's husband
singing. But trust me, that is the version you're probably looking for. The version of "Girl From Ipanema" on this CD is complete
schlock and I have no idea why anyone would want to listen to it. As far as disco goes, I guess this CD is OK if all you want
is a steady beat, but it's not very moving.
Now that I got the bad part of this review over with, now for the good part. "The Puppy Song" is Astrud Gilberto at her best, and is a very nice arrangement, not mindlessly fabricated disco. Astrud Gilberto's voice adds an innocent quality to the song that Harry Nilsson's original doesn't convey. I believe this is the only CD with Astrud Gilberto's version of "The Puppy Song". I think this one song is worth the price of the CD, particularly if you can find it at a used, discounted price. Fortunately for those wanting this CD for this fine gem of a song there should be a lot of used CD's available because of disappointed buyers who really wanted the famous version of the title track.

The way people have been talking about this score, from the reviews to the liner notes, you'd think it was a stylistic counterpart
to "Checkmate." In truth, there is minimal jazz or even pseudo-jazz content in this score. It is mostly orchestral with
occasional jazzy touches, such as vibes or sax, but it's hardly a return to his days as Johnny Williams (as some have suggested).
And the handful of tunes by the likes of Sinatra, Dusty, and Getz/Gilberto are readily available elsewhere in more appropriate
settings. On its own terms, the score is certainly pleasant, but it's hardly a "jazz score" as defined by the likes of Mancini,
Lalo Schifrin, Johnny Mandel, Kenyon Hopkins, and others.
Outstanding!

John Williams does it again! This man is the best composer I have ever heard! The music fits the scenes in the movies so unblievably
well that you will wonder how one man was creative enough to think of it!

The opening theme is the coolest ever. It has that jazzy, suspenseful, space-age groove that takes you back to the early 60's
era portrayed in the movie.
Once I discovered it was done by John Williams, things started to click. The arrangement and themes actually go back way before he was famous. Back to an era he may not want you to remember. Back when he was known simply as "Johnny" Williams.
First, notice the melody and pace of the creeping marimbas and bubbling flutes. Next, catch a repeat of the old Sci-Fi, TV Fairy-Tale known as "LOST IN SPACE." Listen for the incidental, suspense-scene music throughout. Did you catch the composer's name in the credits?
Bingo!(and still very cool)!

30 J. Williams scores. This is wonderful like the rest...

I loved the movie and now the music. I think it is one of the most original soundtracks that John Williams has ever done.
The Jazz in this music is so peaceful and lighthearted. This soundtrack should be on any music lovers shelf. In my book, this
music is a classic film score.

I dearly love Astrud Gilberto. Have almost everything she's ever had
recorded. This particular recording has been issued, re-issued under
about 20 different versions of cd covers, faces, titles, etc. They all
have Astrud Gilberto listed on the front, but not always the same photo
or caption. Same songs on every cd and same versions. For me, the ONLY
keeper on this is the gorgeous rendition of "Far Away" with Astrud and
the late, great Chet Baker in a vocal duet. I only wish the whole cd
was up to this standard, but alas, it is not. Those looking for the
original "Girl From Ipanema" version w/Stan Getz or ANY of Astrud's
other beautiful Verve songs need to stay away from this low point in
her recording career. I don't blame Astrud on this project, and will
forgive her. She obviously had bad advice and/or management with this.
5 stars for "Far Away" and 2 stars for the rest of the material.

a bit distracted at times. What makes this album special are all the great New York studio musicians that play on it. In here
you'll find people like George Young, Eddie Daniels, Will Lee, Allan Schwartzberg, Warren Bernhardt, Jeff Mironov etc. I don't
remember the others offhand. The album also features a special performance by Chet Baker on "Far Away". I recommend this album

So maybe in the 1970s,when both bossa nova and Astrud Gilberto's time had peaked and passed,it seemed a good idea to re-record
these classics in order to sell them to the disco crowd...Maybe Gilberto needed the cash...certainly it was no real stretch
to go from bossa nova to disco..BUT THESE SIDES JUST AIN'T THE SAME AS THE ORIGINALS,and without Stan Getz's contributions
these sides stink...

When I ordered this CD I was expecting the original "The Girl from Ipanema." Imagine my disappointment when a totally different
version, minus the incredible sax, began playing. I wanted to toss it then and there. I decided to check out the rest of
the CD but it didn't get any better. Fortunately, I found the correct recording on the "Getz/Gilberto" CD, which is absolutely
an incredible listening experience. This is the CD you want if you're looking for "The Girl from Ipanema." Don't waste your
money (or your ears) on this CD. Just awful.

This was quite an odd collection of songs, but being a fan of Ms. Gilberto's voice and phrasing if the CD's plays on you just
may forget to press the forward button. I don't know where they found that fantastic electronic piano player but I don't
think I've ever heard an eletric piano sound that grovy before. I didn't really care all that much for most of the tracks
but If you love Ms. Gilberto you need to pick this up.
