This is a lightly recorded Studio quartet date with Bent Hallberg on piano. I used to have it on Mono-LP. Maybe the idea is to pretend it is Live to compensate for the sound quality. The sound may be a little better on Cd but I'm not interested-too many standards. Take this with IMPORTED FROM EUROPE, a mild mannered octet session from the the same year or so if you must but don't say I didn't warn you of possible blandness.---- Stan Getz At Large- 2CD's (1960) with Jan Johanssen on piano is the best of Getz's old school Quartet recordings. The sound is better and Getz's tone is fuller. Most of the tunes are down tempoed a bit but Stan can hold your attention. The CDs run slightly more than 40min.each. They couldn't put both LPs on 1 Cd so they give you a replica of the old rare double LP. Stan's new style approach to playing the Tenor Sax began in earnest in 1961. You have to be a big Bob Brookmeyer fan to dig the 1'st one using this style. He was a full participant.

Stan plays "Indiana" on an unknown gem

Stan Getz wife, Monica, spirited him of to her native Sweden in the late fifties and may have saved his life. While there he played with the local musicians to keep his skills up. This album is one of those efforts.

The chief virtue of "In Stockholm" is that Stan plays a lot of songs not usually associated with him, which he plays nowhere else, to my knowledge, like "(Somewhere) Over the Rainbow", "Get Happy" and "Jeepers Creepers". "Indiana" is really more associated with his sonic tenor sax grandfather, Lester Young. (Contrast this with the Lester Young version of "Indiana" on the "Complete Lester Young and Nat King Cole"!)

This is a album full of pleasant early bebop/swing - perhaps Verve will see fit to release a non-import version, but til that time, this is the only place you can hear it.

The backup band pretty much plays sonic wallpaper for Stan to do his thing. This is pretty well recorded for the time.

Performance: 3 1/2 stars to 4 stars for better than average unknown gem, under my tough grading system! A pleasant surprise! This is a good rating for me, I don't give many 5 star ratings.
