WONDERFUL 1957 RECORDING WITH OSCAR PETERSON, STAN GETZ, RAY BROWN AND HERB ELLIS. MELLOW JAZZ AT ITS' ULTIMATE PEAK. GETZ' LIGHT AND BREEZY STYLE OF PLAYING COMPLEMENTS OSCAR'S ACCOMPANIMENT SUPERLATIVELY. SOME OF THE BEST RECORDED WORKS BY EITHER OF THESE GREAT MUSICIANS (AND THAT'S SAYING A LOT).

Now that the men who collaborated in this session 50 years ago have passed away, this disk provides memories of jazz artists who will never be heard from any other way. Their unique style ic as classic as classical music.

This recording is in my top ten jazz recording list. This should be in every jazz fans collection. When the terms swing, groove, or playing in the pocket are thrown around, this recording should be on of the first to come to mind. Getz and Peterson are in total communication. Their phrasing and ideas are in total aggrement and their lines are fluid and creative. The technique is amazing but never unmusical. There is an obvious Lester Young influence coming through Getz, but one never feels that it's a rip-off like so many players are guilty of. This album is also just a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. Get it!!

STAN IN EUROPE

There seems to be some uncertainty whether this is 2 CDs with a total of 14 tracks or 1 CD with 13 tracks. My recently purchased copy has 14 but the price went up and the tune- In The Night- is omitted from this tracklisting. It might be a new edition.-- Anyway, this is a studio quartet session from 1960, with a rhythm section led by Jan Johanssen. Stan's tone is a bit deeper than usual, appoximating Al Cohn's but Stan's style is immediatley recognized and when he hits the upper register it can be no one else. Most of the tunes are downtempoed with 5 ballads.

Getz, in Europe, soars with melody

In the '58 following his drug bust, Stan Getz married a Danish (?) millionairess who wisked him off to Europe. Otherwise he might have ended up like Art Pepper, with the police, finding out he was out of jail, waiting a few months, and showing up in his doorstep busting him again and again. (read "Straight Life" by Pepper) Pepper spent the best part of his life in jail. But Getz didn't, he lived in Europe for years and then they bought a fortress in New York.

While in Europe, waiting for a less punative climate in America and Bossa Nova, Stan gathered up the local musicians and put out albums like this one from Denmark, Cafe Montmartre. Stan soars and flies like an eagle above the efforts of a backup band that provides a sonic wallpaper background but doesn't offer much invention. Nevertheless the music here is melodic, lyrical, frequently very slow tempoes and Stan's horn sounds rich and round.

The last three songs on CD One are very melancholy and quite heartfelt "When the Sun Comes Out", "Just a Child" and "Folks Who Live on the Hill". This album set has been overlooked for years. While it isn't his best album, the music is pleasant, leisurely and he plays songs herein that are not to be found on any of his other albums, so far as I know, like "Pammies Tune".

Three to four stars on my tough grading system. Recording quality is good for the times. Album notes in Japanese, mostly.

What's average for Stan it's not average for any other.

I still have to find a cd where Stan Getz is nothing less than amazing and I have almost all his complete work or at least a lot of albums from each of his best periods. I agree with the previous reviewer observations about this album. Nevertheless in my opinion it deserves at least four stars, even considering the combo Stan was playing with. This double cd live album comes from the sixties a fabolous musical period for Stan even if he was living in Europe. He is accompanied here by a combo which was not at his height, but hey, his height is Olympus so it's not easy to fly so high for anyone! This doesn't mean that these muscians were amateurs or that they played bad that night. On the contrary, their soft approach in front of such a big star such as Getz, let Stan be freer to play "easier", even more romantic than usual and the result is very pleasing. What you'll find in this pricey gatefold album is Stan at the peak of his form playing sweet and lovely, with a particular warmth, in complete serenity and happiness I may say. The program is very beautiful and relaxed. I strongly suggest the purchase of this album to Stan's lovers even if it's not one of his best for sure. But what's average for Stan, is absolutly not average for any other. If you know Stan, you know what I mean.

Great Performances
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-02
These recordings are EARLIER in Getz's career, way before Sweet Rain, a completely different period. The sound quality sometimes leaves something to be desired on the live recordings because the original masters have been lost. But Getz could play the 'ell out of Bebop and these are some of his finest early performances.

These performances are also available on the Complete Roost Sessions and remastered -- recommended over this particular edition. Those who are familiar with the entire span of Getz's career will understand the importance and pleasure of these great early performances. These are some of my all-time favorites of Getz's entire career. He's incredibly lyrical and he can be creative no matter at what tempo. Gorgeous, straight-ahead, swinging sounds! The 4 stars are for this edtion. Five stars for the Complete Roost Recordings. Ten stars for Getz's playing.

I love Stan Getz music. see my list of Getz best. But this CD...

A few ballads, but complex Bebop at breakneck speeds are the center of gravity of this album, so it's not as laid back as other Getz albums.
From the very early 50's.

The performances on this album are duplicated, in it's entirety, on the better recorded "Complete Roost Session" 3 CD set, so if you already have that, you don't need this.

Standout songs are "Thou Swell", "The Song is You" & "Everything happens to me".

Sound recorded live with old tape recorders is murky with a lot of jitter. Poor quality mix. Performance a "3" - a "C" - representative of the bulk of Getz in my hard grading system, recording quality "1 & 1/2". Better version of these performances elsewhere.
