Three different four-song sessions are reissued on this fine CD. The rambunctious and thick-toned tenor-saxophonist Vido Musso leads the first session, heading a septet that also includes both Kai Winding and Gene Roland on trombones, altoist Boots Mussuli, pianist Marty Napoleon, bassist Eddie Safranski and drummer Denzil Best. "Moose in a Caboose" and the heated "Moose on the Loose" are most memorable. The second date is under bassist Safranski's leadership and he uses a similar group with Musso, altoist Lem Davis, Roland, pianist Sanford Gold, Best and on one song trumpeter Leonard Hawkins. Safranski is well-featured (Musso is a strong co-star) and often recalls Jimmy Blanton in his short solos. The last session on this CD is unrelated to the others, an outing by trombonist Kai Winding that also features the young tenor Stan Getz (who in 1945 already sounds reconizable) and trumpeter Shorty Rogers. Highly Recommended!

I am looking for the recordings of a tenor saxophone player Vido MUSSO. I would appreciate your helping me find his recordings reproduced on CDs. All the information I have is that he played with Stan Kenton and Benny Goodman bands. An album of which I know is "The Swingin'st Vido Musso". Label: Album - Crown Records CLP 5007. I believe this album is one of Stan's most profound projects. Discontinued by the production company, this album still influences my playing to this day! For instance, the one thing that drew me to this song was how he opened Willow Weep For Me as he "weeps" for attention in an introducing cadenza. Another thing, interestingly enough, is the drummer on this album does not use a hi-hat for the duration of the song (which strikes me... I don't know how, but it does). I believe the innovation of this very popular standard has caught much attention, but is rarely played on jazz stations, if ever. I recommend the producers re-release this album.
