"Charlie was a true original - unique musical vision"

Concord Jazz presents one of the true great jazz musicians of our time, Charlie Byrd in his final studio recording - "For Louis", having the greatest respect for "Satchmo Armstrong" this album was conceived and dedicated.

Charlie and his love for the guitar was influenced by Andreas Segovia and Charlie Christian, but it was in Brazil he discovered his love for the emerging "bossa nova" movement. Recorded with the great saxophonist Stan Getz the big hit - "Desafinado" in 1962 and the bossa nova wave arrived in North America.

Byrd recorded for Concord in the mid '70s to the '90s, holds the distinction as the artist with the longest consecutive history with the label, over twenty-five years - here are just a few titles "Blue Byrd" (1978), "Sugarloaf Suite" (1979), "Brazilville" (1981), "Isn't It Romantic" (1984), "Tango" (1985), "It's A Wonderful World" (1988), "Du Hot Club De Concord" (1995), "Great Guitars 2" (1995), "My Inspiration: Music of Brazil" (1999) and this current release with the tasteful, low-key and ingratiatingly melodic style Charlie is noted for.

The entire album is a HIGHLIGHT, as Charlie celebrates Louis Armstrong we say thank you, for the indelible contribution and the introduction of both classical guitar and Brazilian influences, which created a whole new musical blueprint for us to follow...spin this CD, sit back and just listen to GREAT JAZZ - Charlie Byrd style!

This is an outstanding recording that captures Byrd doing some of his best stuff. This cd sound is transparent. And the hard and tendor are coexisting. Recording is filled with intense and amazing solos and improvisation, fascinating harmonic changes. Charlie Byrd in his later years at his best! Regard Byrd with respect.

I first found this album, on vinyl, in a used record store in Manhattan in 1966. It was so impressive, it has been my favorite Jazz Guitar album ever since. The "Fanatasia on Which Side Are You On" is a journey you'll never forget. It is a masterpiece.

Charlie hot and unamplified before Bossa Nova

One of my favorite Charlie Byrd albums. The setting is intimate, the playing is very good, the guitar is umamplified--or nearly so.

These two sets reveal that Charlie Byrd was a skillful and mature guitarist two years before his association with Stan Getz. The arrangement of "Why Was I Born," is a very nice guitar arrangement (key of A) and shows that Charlie knew how slowly a ballad can be played--many musicians would have been unable to keep the tempo down and still be creative.

Some nice improvising and Charlie's trademark crazy classical tricks on Ellington's Just Squeeze Me.

A pleasantly warm trio in a real setting. Buy it and transport yourself to a small club in the Village in the early, early sixties, before life was complex!

I've had a tape of this since it came out. The arrangements are more Byrd-like than his recent Christmas release, and therefore more fun (and musical). It's one of the few Christmas albums I play frequently every year without getting tired of it.

If you're looking for the bossa nova Charlie Byrd or the jazz artistry you're used too, this album might disappoint you a little. But if you want some really beautiful Christmas music played by a real artist, you'll love it. It is a quiet peaceful group of familiar tunes played with finesse and style. Buy it for next year - you won't be sorry.

A Fresh Sound to Christmas

This album exhibits the guitar artistry for which the late Charlie Byrd was known and loved. The album includes traditional seasonal music. It is a wonderful balance to another Christmas album by Byrd on the Columbia label released during the early 60s that showcases religious music of Christmas.
