Every track on this CD is fabulous. Great interpetation of original Brasilian music that brings the real sounds, feel, and romantic spirit of the country to life.

Not sufficiently purist...

I love most Charlie Byrd album, but this one isn't one of my favorites. The saxophone is intrusive (unlike Byrd's collaboration with Scott Hamilton) and detracts from Byrd's virtuoso guitar playing.

I haven't received this CD yet, but I have the paper-thin albums of these renditions. I have been a Charlie Byrd fan for many years, and will continue to be.

If you love latin rhythms, if you love the sound of a sweet and mellow guitar, you are in for a treat. Every song is a thing of beauty before Charlie finishes it.

If you are already a fan, this is a wonderful way to preserve those beautiful songs, and his beautiful renditions. I am so glad I can revisit my favorite guitarist!

Wonderful! Buenísimo! Formidável!

Bossa nova standards where every note from every musician
counts with no orchestra to detract from the simple
beauty of each. You will be familiar with most of these songs,
esp. those written by Jobim, from Byrd's other albums but, to your surprise in many cases, you may find yourself preferring these renditions.

This collection of jazz is a real gem that combines both smooth and relaxing tempo with a fine balance of upbeat rhythm and mix. Pieces like "I'm On My Way" and "Side Track" just to name a few make your heart beat and feel alive while simultaneously relaxing your mind and body. It's hard to find such a jazz collection that reaches to both ends of the spectrum of emotion and combine them into a magnificent work of art. Definitely a buy with no regrets!

This CD has some excellent cuts. Particularly exciting-- Kenny Burell's "La Petite Mambo", and the live Joe Pass/Herb Ellis "Seven Come Eleven". There are also some really dull cuts here that aren't worth a listen. I picked up this CD very early in my jazz listening, hoping for a "Who's Who" in jazz guitar, but this hardly represents what's out there. Yes, you get greats like Pass, Ellis, Burell, Freddie Green, Tal Farlow, and Barney Kessel, but not necessarily at their best, and thrown in are second rate players like Charlie Byrd (sorry to offend any Aquarius fans).

I purchased this cd after hearing Charlie Byrd play "Cavatina" on one of the Jazz For compilation cds. Am I glad that I did! The entire cd is wonderful, but it's worth buying if only for the performances of "Ashokan Farewell" and "Cavatina". SUPERB!!!

Jazz collaboration done right: Hamilton's sax never overpowers Byrd's guitar. Great album.

Smooth straight jazz done right

Review Date: 2008-01-26
Byrd and his band are their usual musical and highly competent selves. Hamilton's sax is smooth as silk. It's hard for me to review this album because I can't really find anything to criticize.

The recording quality is very good. The songs have strong melodies, and the improvisations never veer off into atonality or astringency. It is relaxing, but not boring. Perhaps it isn't the ultimate in virtuosity, but I think I could call it near-virtuoso. The ensemble has a coherent "tight looseness" -- the musicians are all together, but the music isn't mechanical.

I'm sorry to see this album is out of print and not a big seller. For my money, and for my listening pleasure, this album is better than Byrd's huge 1960's success Jazz Samba with Getz.

The biggest compliment I can offer is that I've played it many times and I'm not weary of it. When I see it on the shelf, it is like an old friend that I want to spend some time with. When I play it, it makes me smile inside. If you're looking for avant garde, look elsewhere. If you want straight ahead jazz in the smooth lyrical Stan Getz or Vince Guaraldi mode, I think this fills the bill.

I have had the extreme pleasure of seeing Charlie Byrd perform many times in Annapolis,MD where he resides. Each time I see him, he seems to play better and better. Jazz & Samba is a beautiful blend of styles that leaves one wanting the music to never end. He is truly a master above all.
