My Best Brazilian Album (so far)

That was a long time ago when I first listened to it when LP reigns supreme and I was knocked out by the soft lyrical melodies created in this collaboration by Bethania, Gil, Gilberto and Veloso. I was already a Sergio Mendez fan and later a Jobim admirer and it never occured to me I would meet 4 more Brazilian greats in just one album! I never heard it played in the airwaves where I come from but my record player was constantly playing it. Fasttrack to the CD age (late 90's maybe): I always wanted to have that album in CD form and when finally I saw it in a small CD shop in Singapore, I was just ecstatic! It was just like finding something very valuable that was lost. "All of Me" (Disse Alguiem)- I thought would never be improvized but their version might be even be better than the original (you don't have to know Portuguese to understand the song). What pure joy to listen to these tracts that was made more than 3 decades ago!

A gorgeous merging of Brazilian MPB and classic bossa nova

This is one of the most lovely records made by bossa nova legend Joao Gilberto, a rich, gentle meditation made with the cooperation of three legendary pop artists -- Maria Bethania, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso -- who represented a younger generation of musical pioneers that looked back at Joao with love and admiration. It is one of the finest albums to come out of the "MPB" (popular Brazilian music) scene of the 1970s and early '80s, a simply gorgeous, lavish exploration of some of the softest sounds imaginable. Just wonderful. (DJ Joe Sixpack)

If you are into Brazil/Electronica, DO NOT GO FOR THIS. I admit it is a fun CD but after the first track or so you start to think that maybe you should be playing shuffleboard on an old person's cruise or listening to this at a retirement center. It's just not up to date with what is considered modern Brazil/Bossa Nova/Electronica.

Awesome collection of songs. I was wary that it may be too electronic or fusional... but not so! There are blazing instrumental parts and absolutely incredible, powerful and full-of-life vocals that will really make you want to dance! You will hardly even notice the electronic elements, as they only enhance all the live action. A great driving, party, or chore-doing CD. Seriously consider getting it! Lots of tracks, too!

Excellent disk. Salome de Bahia is a great singer and Bob Sinclar a great producer. It brings a fresh look to classic Brazilian tunes, as well as Salome's own.

Pre-hype album

I've owned the LP for ages. The LP is showing signs of its age, but the content makes this album one of my favorites. The addition of Wanda de Sah and Rosinha de Valenca to the excellent Sergio Mendes Trio makes for pure listening pleasure all the way through. Brasil '65 is (IMHO) better musically than Brasil '66 - why it wasn't as successful is beyond me.

No reviews for this great CD?? Sergio Mendes was one of the best-selling Brazilian artists of all time, and this album was his breakthrough smash. I like all the songs, but 'Let Me' and 'One Note Samba' are among my most favorites at the moment. This is a nice introduction to bossa nova style in the mid-to-late '60s. If you enjoy so-called 'easy listening' music (which this definitely is), then check it out. You won't be disappointed!

One of the last lost Treasures among Brazilian Jazz

I'm so glad I finally got to review this amazing CD by Master Sergio Mendes.
This CD originally released in 1986 will go on to history as a very rare release; you name the format; CD, Album, Cassette, this recording did not hit the markets massively, so now is as hard to get it, almost as it was back then.
Three special features make this CD very special;
1. The great collaboration Dori Caymmi brought to the recording (compositional-wise and performance-wise)
2. Three super hits in almost all Jazz radio stations from 1986 to mid 90's by three different vocalists in this same album:
- "Daylight" / Performed by Siedah Garrett
- "Your Smile" / Performed by Gracinha Leporace
- "No Place to Hide" / Performed by Lani Hall
and...
3. A great pop hit from the 80's that you can only find in this album: "Take This Love".

And finally I'd like to point out as customery, all the great musicians in this historical recording:

- Sergio Mendes / Piano, Keyboards, Sinclavier, Compositions, Arrangements, Production
- Jeff Porcaro / Drums
- Paulinho Da Costa / Percussions
- Gracinha Leporace / Vocals
- Siedah Garrett / Vocals
- Lani Hall / Vocals
- Joe Pizzulo / Vocals
- Dori Caymmi / Vocals, Guitars
- Peter Wolf / Keyboards, Sinclavier, Compositions, Production
- Michael McDonald / Additional Vocals
- Dann Huff / Guitars
- Ernie Watts / Saxophone
- Alphonso Johnson / Bass
- Nathan East / Bass
- Phil Perry / Additional Vocals
- etc. etc.

If you can find it, purchase it at once since it's almost impossible to find; own a piece of history.

A Diamond in the pile!

This whole effort was doomed from the beginning. The 80's were generally not kind to Sergio Mendes, his genre and his offerings. The MOR sound he was dumping out was quick to grab and quicker to disappear. Those of who know this genius' stuff, however, have found a diamond in the pile of banality here. The Dori Caymmi tune "The River (O Rio)" which is at the very least one of the best songs he wrote amoung the thousands. The Mendes treatment of this musical gem, with Caymmi himself doing voice and guitar, is worth the price of a ticket if it were not laced with so much lard.
Don't buy this unless you are a collector and need it to complete the discography..because unless I am wrong, there's a copy bootlegged, at a yard sale or another source's catalog for a lot better price.

This album is a typical blend of brazilian music and modern jazz. The vocals are exquisite and to me this album is an evergreen. When it first came out - almost 20 years ago - I bought it on vinyl. Now, having acquired the CD, I am amazed how contempory the music is. Sergio Mendes has still got it indeed!

I was looking for this album to be recorded on CD for years!
I purchased this album almost 30 years ago on vinyl and after the CD format came out I couldnt find this particular album for years. Then a few months ago doing a search on your website I finally found out that this particular CD HAD been recorded back in 02.
The technical quality is excellent and it brings back fond memories.

I originally bought this album when it came out in 1985 or 1986. It was always one of my very favorite albums of all times. I still have the album, but nothing to play it on. I haven't heard it probably since 1987. I recently purchased the MP3 version, and I must say it still stands out as one of the best!!! And surprisingly so, I still remember the words. The vocals, harmonies still are some of the best I've ever heard on any song. "One More Lie" alone is worth the price, pure 80's pop/soul with that great Sergio Mendes Brazilian beat!

Great Music!

Late 70's came back to me like a flash. I used to hear this on the airwave when I was young. stuff like Waters of March, Bridges, Midnight Lover & That's enough for me are a tremendous vocal rhythm that made Sergio Mendez a fixture in Latin-Jazz and Soulful Samba. He's on top of his game.

Big & glossy but very enjoyable

The liner notes on this Brasilian import CD state that the budget for this album was approximately $200,000, which is a staggeringly huge amount, especially for 1977-78. But this is definitely Sergio's lushest production from his Elektra years, so maybe it's correct.

Sergio maintains a fine balance between lush pop ("Bridges," which charted in the Philippines, and "Midnight Lovers," which includes some gorgeous multi-tracked harmonies), Brasilian jazz ("Misturada," one of his finest instrumental outings, and "Tiro Cruzado", a very funky piece previously done by Jobim and Miucha), as well as some proto-disco material ("One More Lie" and "That's Enough For Me.").

This album basically fell flat in the American market--by the time Sergio released his next, and last, Elektra album (the lamentable "Magic Lady"), he had been "demoted" from the Butterfly label to the budget standard red Elektra label. But this penultimate release from his first Elektra stint is a gorgeous and worthwhile album for all Mendes fans.

I find it interesting that so many fans of Brazilian music disregard this collection as "inauthentic," "too electronic" or "too trendy." While it may lack the driving, infectious beats of samba or forro and the gritty, sweaty feel that sometimes goes along, the music often seems to me an extension of bossa nova: cool music for hot days. There are some very sweet tracks on here. It is a CD that doesn't demand much of you; it doesn't make you want to dance or thump something to keep time; mostly it makes you want to be somewhere breezy with a caprinha in hand -- beside a pool, say.

I'm not five-starring it because it's not wholly original: a couple of the tracks were a bit bland. But the rest were lovely, original gems. And the packaging rocks.

I can't believe the negative reviews below! This is the BEST CD sampler of ELECTRONICA BASS-A-NOVA that I've come across. Purists should look elsewhere. (Just because you happen to like Bo Diddley, doesn't mean you can't love They Might Be Giants or Radiohead too.) I, too, have over 100 Brasilian albums & CDs, but I still love this. I've had it for several years and it's a great introduction to a variety of new artists from Brasil including Lenine, Zuco 103, Smoke City, Suba, Arnaldo Antunes, Arto Lindsay, and Fernanda Abreu. It's full of modern electronica innovations, creativity, and rhythms. It's fantastic!

A killer collection of Brazil's best new artists. Includes cult favorites such as Lenine and Arnaldo Antunes, as well as better-known musicians such as rocker Chico Science and novo traditionalist, Virginia Rodrigues. The emphasis here is on smooth soul, triphop, and novo bossa nova, and vague hints of the Brazilian electronica scene -- it's interesting that Brazilian pop, which has often stumbled so badly over cheesy overproduction, is now finding such fertile ground in the dreamy, slow, chill-room vibe... Although this album fudges a little to select mellower tracks by occasionally rowdier artists, it's a strong song selection, and flows well as an album. A sweet peek at some of the new stuff which can barely be heard outside of Brazil proper -- worth checking out.

AWFUL!!!

I have been a long time fan of Brazilian music and own a huge collection of cd's from ballads to pulsating carnaval music. I agree with the reviewer who said this was garbage. This is NOT Brazilian music. It is repetitive, electronic "sound" that can become annoying and very boring. It does not do justice to the mastery of the Brazilian musicians most of us admire. If you are searching for a better representation of Brazilian music I would recommend the cd "Chill Brazil".

I definitely agree with Larry - this is tremendous and was a very influential cd for me. Anyone looking to do a true sampler compilation should take a look at what Ziriguiboom did with this. Ziriguiboom/Crammed has basically partnered up with Six Degrees Records and release great artists on the labels. This was fantastic at getting the word out and made me look forward to hearing their artists that were coming out, like Zuco 103, Suba and Bebel Gilberto.

This sampler is from 1999 and was also a fantastic prelude to the nu-brazil sound/electric Brazil sound altogether. The cuts here by Bebel Gilberto and Zuco 103 are prototypes of songs on their respective albums - they aren't the same as the ones on their feature releases. Another artist that would release an extremely successful album was Suba, who featured Cibelle, Katia B and Joao Parahyba to name a few. Here you hear the ultra sexy "Voce Gosta". Andrea Marquee, who does "Carmesim" here (a breathtaking and breezy summer cut that's only on this cd) later went to Sterns, released "Zumbi" and has been huge in live theater productions... what a voice she has! Rounding out the impressive musical line-up is Lenine's rockin' tale of aliens arriving in Brazil, a pretty light modern sounding Daude track I love, Arnaldo Artunes with Marisa Monte (Tribalistas!) re-doing "Alta Noite" while Fernanda Abreu's seductive "take a Walk on the Wild Side" finishes up the vocal tracks. Arakatuba has an electric samba to conclude the cd... as interpreted by Fila Brazilia.

I HIGHLY recommend this cd. Even today it's great compared to other similar compilations at the time. Just look at what's happened to some of the musicians featured here since this release - most (actually, all of them) have released terrific cd's; some more dated than others. Just do a search on Amazon for the artists - it's really impressive IMO. If you like this, of the artists here I would recommend the artists works; especially Bebel Gilberto and Suba. Also if you're looking for something similar, Ziriguiboom released a sampler at the end of 2002 titled "Now Sound of Brazil" which features more artists from their label. Also check out 's "The Brazilian Vibe Experience". Enjoy!
