I really enjoyed this CD, but please note that these are not all Jobim songs. Rather, they're mostly Stan Getz and Luiz Bonfa songs... literally. And they have been given different names. It should also be known that all of the songs are on a double cd which someone else here had mentioned.

The music is hard to explain, but it is a very good of course (Getz, Bonfa, etc.), as if it is played romantically on an older styled record player. The sound quality is hardly to be envied. It sounds as if a tape recorder was placed against a speaker as the record played (don't laugh. That might have been how this cd was made). But that quiet sound takes you back into time, almost imagining a honeymoon on a private beach.

Nice CD. And for the price, it is very good to add to the collection.

Great music. Poor sound quality. No info about the cd whatsoever. Who played on it? When was it recorded? Still, may be worth getting for the price..

I am a huge A.C. Jobim Fan from Ft. Worth. The CD is Quaint.

A very nice collection of some obscure songs. I enjoyed the CD very much. Was very happy to add it to my extensive collection. Overall, it's a good deal! Eventhough every cut on the CD did not have total consistent Stereo Sound; I still found Value in the music. David

The only reason this CD is not four stars is because it is only half of a double CD set. Other than that, it is incredibly romantic and nostalgic. It reminds you of a quiet sunset on a beach with the love of your life. The sound quality isn't perfect but that imperfection gives the CD charm for classic enthusiasts. It also greatly contrasts to the more popular Jobim titles. This'll definitely get your mouth wet but if you can, find the double CD.

I doubt if Jobim had a lot to do with this album. Most of the numbers on this cd can be heard either on the Luis Bonfa album 'Composer of Black Orpheus Sings and Plays' or the Bonfa/Getz album 'Jazz Samba Encore'. And most of the compositions on this record are also usually credited to Bonfa, but with different titles. As far as I can tell the only two 'real' Jobim numbers on the cd are 'Janelas Abertas' and 'Estrada Branca, which are featured here in 'okay' versions. But all in all, if you are interested in hearing this music, you might be better off buying the two abovementioned albums, since they have a much better sound quality.

COMPILATION OF 1970'S JOBIM RECORDINGS, A GOOD FIFTEEN YEARS AFTER THE INITIAL BOSSA NOVA CRAZE, BUT NEVERTHELESS DAZZLING IN ITS' TIMELESSNESS AND BEAUTY. WONDERFUL MUSIC, A GREAT CD OF CLASSIC RECORDINGS. BRAZILIAN MUSIC HAD A BIG RESURGENCE IN THE 70'S WITH THE EMERGENCE OF STARS LIKE MILTON NASCIMENTO, WHICH FOCUSED A LOT OF ATTENTION TO THIS GENRE OF MUSIC. A VERY, MELLOW, MELODIC, AND ENJOYABLE CD.

Quincy Jones once said trying to compose and record a #1 hit is like trying to bottle lightning, but in the end, you have to leave room for God to walk through.

No doubt, there's alot of give and take involved with the music industry.

During the late 70's, Miucha and Antonio Carlos Jobim joined forces to assemble a string of hits that made a big impact.

Echoes Of Rio is a compilation of these timeless recordings put together by RCA, the majority of the tracks are off the 1977 Miucha and Antonio Carlos Jobim LP.

Echoes Of Rio is solid gold, each song will sear into your memory cells and leave you humming with your heart pounding.

All the Hits are here, Vei Levando, Sei La' A Vida Tem Sempre Razao' and Choro De Nada...

The haunting rhythms and arrangements strike a definate accord, one of the greatest track list I've heard.

Magic.

Thank you, RCA. Thank you Miucha & Tom for a lovely set of songs!

"Not Astrud's Best Hour"

I dearly love Astrud Gilberto. Have almost everything she's ever had
recorded. This particular recording has been issued, re-issued under
about 20 different versions of cd covers, faces, titles, etc. They all
have Astrud Gilberto listed on the front, but not always the same photo
or caption. Same songs on every cd and same versions. For me, the ONLY
keeper on this is the gorgeous rendition of "Far Away" with Astrud and
the late, great Chet Baker in a vocal duet. I only wish the whole cd
was up to this standard, but alas, it is not. Those looking for the
original "Girl From Ipanema" version w/Stan Getz or ANY of Astrud's
other beautiful Verve songs need to stay away from this low point in
her recording career. I don't blame Astrud on this project, and will
forgive her. She obviously had bad advice and/or management with this.
5 stars for "Far Away" and 2 stars for the rest of the material.

I've always liked this album. I've not listened that much to Ms Gilberto but I like her voice a lot, even though she sounds a bit distracted at times. What makes this album special are all the great New York studio musicians that play on it. In here you'll find people like George Young, Eddie Daniels, Will Lee, Allan Schwartzberg, Warren Bernhardt, Jeff Mironov etc. I don't remember the others offhand. The album also features a special performance by Chet Baker on "Far Away". I recommend this album to anyone who likes good music!

So maybe in the 1970s,when both bossa nova and Astrud Gilberto's time had peaked and passed,it seemed a good idea to re-record these classics in order to sell them to the disco crowd...Maybe Gilberto needed the cash...certainly it was no real stretch to go from bossa nova to disco..BUT THESE SIDES JUST AIN'T THE SAME AS THE ORIGINALS,and without Stan Getz's contributions these sides stink...

When I ordered this CD I was expecting the original "The Girl from Ipanema." Imagine my disappointment when a totally different version, minus the incredible sax, began playing. I wanted to toss it then and there. I decided to check out the rest of the CD but it didn't get any better. Fortunately, I found the correct recording on the "Getz/Gilberto" CD, which is absolutely an incredible listening experience. This is the CD you want if you're looking for "The Girl from Ipanema." Don't waste your money (or your ears) on this CD. Just awful.

This was quite an odd collection of songs, but being a fan of Ms. Gilberto's voice and phrasing if the CD's plays on you just may forget to press the forward button. I don't know where they found that fantastic electronic piano player but I don't think I've ever heard an eletric piano sound that grovy before. I didn't really care all that much for most of the tracks but If you love Ms. Gilberto you need to pick this up.

La més famosa bossa nova
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-28
