there are so many "Kings" of New Orleans keyboard, I can't even think of them all, but you'd have to list Professor Longhair, Roosevelt Sykes, Huey Piano Smith, Tuts Washington, and Dr. John among them. And right up there is James Booker, a great talent who had a pretty sad life due to an addiction problem. This is a great CD that showcases his talent, you will enjoy it for sure.

I'm probably the only musician in Italy that knows the incredible Music of James Booker! (what a shame! ) This record is maybe my favourite (i've got them all). Ispired, very good sound, so many songs and, most of all, just James's voice and fingers. It's impossible to listen to more art from a single man. Long life to the music of Booker, Longhair and Dr John!

What do you get when you combine the music and talents of Beethoven, Chopin, Jelly Roll Morton, Professor Longhair, and Ray Charles? A freak of nature, a.k.a. James Booker.

Who'd believe guitarist Eddie Angel would actually be in TWO different bands that wear MASKS onstage? But this AIN'T surfin' music, baby!! It's LOUD, it's CRUDE, it's BLUNT, it's BRUTAL-- and it'll probably have you laughing your ... off! Hear tributes to ape men ("Arula Mata Gali"), sci-fi movie monsters ("Werewolf From Outer Space"), bad girls ("Betty Lou's Got A New Tattoo"), teens gone wild ("Girl And A Hot Rod"), horror movie monsters ("Jungle Zombies Ate My Baby"). And I haven't even mentioned my favorites yet! If you don't fall over laughing when you hear "2000 Pound Werewolf" or "Twinkle Toes", then you take your music too darn seriously! What are you waiting for? BUY this NOW!!

For more in a similar vein, don't miss the Neanderthals' 2nd album-- THE MODERN STONE-AGE FAMILY, or the earlier recordings found on EDDIE ANGEL'S GUITAR PARTY. Have a blast!

this is real rock n roll ,baby!

***1/2 - classic Chicago blues revisited
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-15
Howlin' Wolf's lead guitarist Hubert Sumlin teams up with Muddy Waters' piano player Joe Willie Perkins on this warm 1998 album.
Neither of the two old men can match Muddy Waters or the Wolf for sheer vocal power (Pinetop Perkins was 84 at the time this record was made), but Sumlin in particular is a more than adequate singer, and the pair are quite convincing on an energetic "Got My Mojo Working".
Harmonica player Annie Raines is excellent; funky without being too much, and while a superflous rendition of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's "She Walks Right In", sung by Raines and guitarist Doug Wainoris, should have been omitted, the overall quality of this material is quite high. Neither Perkins nor Sumlin have lost their instrumental prowess, and the rhythm section is excellent as well.

Still, this is not a must-have blues record. The original versions of these songs are by far the more memorable, and this album is more cozy than fiery. But "Legends" still provides a nice opportunity to hear two of the greatest sidemen of the "classic" Chicago blues era, and both of them still have quite a lot of spark left in them.
3 1/2 stars. Nice.

Pinetop at Antones, Naturally the Best
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-14
I just returned from a live performance by the "living legend" of Boogie Woogie. Prior to my trip from San Antonio to Antones blues clup in Austin to See Mr Perkins perform, I gave this CD a listen. This recording truly captures the ambiance of the Austin blues club that has been the "Fort Apache" of the blues south of Chicago. Pinetops personable performance on the recording is exactly the way it is if you were standing next to the piano (as I was). "Big fat Mama" tends to stand out as my favorite boogie woogie tunes done by Mr. P, though his others such as "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie" with it's halts in the progression by Pinetop instructing "Stop!, dont you turn a page" This performance was recorded when Pinetop was 86 years old. He is 88 now and still rocks those keys as if he were 20. I couldn't help but tell Mr P "Pinetop, you the Best!"
