This is a great sampler of the early jazz pianists of the late 20s and 30s. It swings and the sound is clear. Actually,
the CD contains 24 cuts :Earl Hines (A MONDAY DATE and I AINT GOT NOBODY), Duke Ellington (BLACK BEAUTY and SWAMPY RIVER),
Teddy Wilson (DON'T BLAME ME and EVERY NOW AND THEN), Meade Lux Lewis (HONKY TONK TRAIN BLUES), Albert Ammons (SHOUT FOR JOY),
Count Basie (HOW LONG BLUES and THE DIRTY DOZEN), Billy Kyle (BETWEEN SETS and FINISHING UP A DATE), Fats Waller (HANDDUL
OF KEYS and NUMB FUMBLING), Mary Lou Williams (OVERHAND and THE PEARLS), Joe Sullivan (GIN MILL BLUES and ONYX BRINGDOWN),
Bix Beiderbecke (IN A MIST), Jess Stacy (IN THE DARK/FLASHES, BARRELLHOUSE and THE WORLD'S WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE), Art Tatum
(GONE WITH THE WIND and STORMY WEATHER). It's an earful!

Kindred knows his way around the ivories. Did you know he wrote the classic "Cold Shot" by Stevie Ray? Well, get ready to
get your feet a-stomping & your hips a-swaying when you hear this masterful blues man. If you love the Texas/Louisiana sound,
this one is for you!
This guy could be the best

This album sucked me in and melted my mind from the first listen. The tunes are primarily jumpin' boogie woogies with a few
New Orleans style numbers as well. I'm not sure what the proper name for that feel is (2nd line or 3rd line or something
like that?). In any case this is no ordinary boogie piano playing. There's some classical-ish licks thrown in there as well
as some crazy time signature stuff. The vocals are low down and raspy. This is the kind of stuff that I was looking to hear
on a recent visit to New Orleans and I heard nothing even remotely like this. If this guy lived in my town (Milwaukee) I'd
be a regular at his gigs. This guy makes Carl Leyland (another great) look like a slouch.

Get this album. Do it. great songwriting and musicianship. Lisa is third millenium blues/jazz w/ a philosophical and positive
twist. Great quality all around, and her band ain't too bad either! Jon Westfall on drums, Carla Brownlee on Sax, Steve Grams
on Bass. Lisa has taken this material and band to appreciative audiences in Europe and USA. ... she's great.

Joe Turner made some great jump blues records in the thirties, forties and fifties, but I have always felt that his jazzy
blues outings on Pablo Records in the seventies and eighties were even better...Turner gets to stretch his performances, the
musicians are allowed to jam on and on, and everybody seem to be cool and comfortable. Listen to "Rocks In My Bed" for a taste
of how good a simple blues can get! This album must not be confused with the similarly-titled album of hits from the forties,
which, however, is also a gem. To understand Turner in his later years, try the album with Roy Eldridge, Milt Jackson and
PeeWee Crayton ("Nobody In Mind"), as well as the wonderful album reviewed here...
