Funk Brothers Music

I discovered this after discovering the song Fifty Yards of Soul on the stellar album Raw Funk and learned about the Whitefield Bros. Fifty Yards is in my opinion one of the strongest funk numbers of all time -like one reviewer said, if you're not moving to it you're dead.
This album however, is on an entirely different plane. These songs have the same elements - stripped back sound, ridiculous beats, Meters-like interplay - but is much deeper, experimental in its rawness, almost trancelike funk. It sounds both primitive and futuristic. Very fun to sink into after multiple listenings. Wow.

I just discovered this whole world of funk revival and i love it. This album is laced with heavy funk beats, ... trumpets, funky flutes and more. A couple tracks take it back to the Afrikan roots, incorporating tribal chants. It gives the album more diversity to the edgy yet repetative beats. It sounds just like another day of jam sessions at Soul Fire records.
I got this album when I was in New York City over the summer and was on a search for funk record stores. I mistook Soul Fire for a retail shop and found myself at this low-key apartment studio in Upper Manhattan where all the Soul Fire recording is done. They mainly put out 45s so the guy there gave me this CD and a 45 of my choice.
I also highly recommend one of my favorite joints of all time on the 45" "Answer Me Softly" by Fabulous Three which recently appeared as 45 of the Month in Big Daddy Magazine (an awesome source for funk and hip hop fans)

Nu funk is gonna bridge the generation gap between the old and new school... and I'm telling you this from the perspective of a high school student. Support indie labels and the cool people at Soul Fire and check this album out.

Sims Records a now defunct Nashville label maybe the most unsuccessful record company in history. (That is with Chart success).

The Wallace Bros set has all the groups singles and some album cuts as well. If you are a fan, you'll like this package, if not save your money.

This is one of those albums that supports my contention that some of the best music ever recorded rarely gets heard. The closest thing The Wallace Brothers had to a hit single was when "Lover's Prayer" hit No. 97 in 1964. And the only reason I discovered this vocal group was by purchasing Dave Marsh's book The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made. Since 1989 I've been tracking down each of these singles. [I've found all but four.] In 1996 Excello released all of The Wallace Brothers' Sims recordings from 1964 to 1967.

"Precious Words" was the single Marsh chose for inclusion in his book (at #934). Recorded in 1964, The Wallace Brothers were still in their mid-teens, but their vocal performance belies their age. This is a soulful love song driven by a simple organ with occasional piano flourishes, their voices harmonizing beautifully.

Contrary to the Amazon review, there is little slick or polished about this. Instrumentation (usually organ, piano and sax) is sparse. The emphasis is on the vocals. This is raw, unpolished soul. The Wallace Brothers succeeded with pure emotion and intensity. But isn't that what you're looking for in soul music? Powerful stuff. RECOMMENDED

This is a swell little complilation of pure funk tunes. I've no idea if the film they were supposedly used in ever saw the light of day (or the darkeness of a theater) but the music speaks for itself.

Of particular interest to hard-core James Brown fans is an undubbed version of the 1976 track "Can't Take it With You." The track as it was released in '76, and in subsequent compilation reissues before this one, was heavily overdubbed by Brown with additional percussion and group "party" vocals. This cd is the ONLY commercial source for the pure, undubbed version. And the undubbed version is far superior to the released version--harder hitting, with a more muscular mix and less nonsense going on in the background.

Of course, only of interest to hard core JB fans.
