Well, how d'you put that one? Say, in 1984 or so, following a friend's advice I checked the (never heard before) Brecker brothers, the only one they carried in store was "Detente" so I bought it; well next thing I remember is being P... off by the disco-funk beat which I hated, but after some 30 seconds when the first chorus went off, had realized that it was my best record ever. Well what they do is, take any style and burst it from the inside, into jazz frenzy. My masters ever since, btw I used to play trumpet and my bro is still a pro at saxophone, he learned a great deal from them crazy brothers.
You can blindly go for it, quality 360° scope.

I'm a fan, especially after seeing that amazing performance she had in Shadows of Motown.

This disc just has a great feel to it - if you like her voice, and like the r&b type sound, you'll love it.

No, i don't actually KNOW Joan, any more than any of the other thousands who had the pleasure of watching her smoke every other chick on the NYC music scene when the calendar started with a 19 and not a 20. i am writing this b/c another reviewer reminded how much i used to really enjoy catching joan live at wetlands, delta- even at continental divide and gonzales if memory serves- it seemed like you could catch her somewhere at least once a week and sometimes even twice. i get up at 5 am for work, and joan was the only musician who could ALWAYS get me out on a school night. this album almost captures her LIVE energy.
i remember the first time i saw her live at a w/e outdoor show at the seaport [an outdoor 'mall' that i despised, but my EXwife liked]. in the midst of all the summertime heat and shopping, folks profiling their boats and overdressed types getting their heels caught in the boardwalk, i heard the voice of an angel- albeit a dirty angel that sang with a leer and a wink. if you think her vh1 or austin city limits gigs were hot, they were nothing compared to hearing her in a low ceilinged, smoke filled juke joint, watching her hips sway as she torched the joint with her sheer joy at being alive. she could take that room up and down and all around and you wouldn't hit the head for fear of missing a moment. and now she opens for the 'dixie chicks'.... i'm waiting for her return to small venue playing- that is the very best place to feel her full impact.
enough of the memory lane- just letting you know i been digging joan since you didn't know who she was, and i am telling you that THIS IS THE JOAN THAT I REMEMBER! no, i don't absolutely love every cut, but nonetheless, this is consistently among the most played on my iPod- much more than relish or righteous love [both good in their own right- BUT not Definitive joan]. i will leave it to others to break it down cut by cut- on the whole they get it right. i just need to let you know that THIS is joan, 'straight no chaser'!

btw- ran into her in street recently and the energy and vibe art STILL there in person. if you EVER have a chance to see her live, do yourself a favour and GO!

Passionate and full of soul. I wish I dropped by Delta 88 to hear Joan live. Even if you're not a fan of her recent CDs, this one is worth getting. Think Janis Joplin, Aretha and Billie, but with her own distinct style. Buy it and enjoy, you won't be disappointed.

Joan Osborne is simply an amazing talent and this may be her best album!!! Having grown up in Memphis around the music of Furry Lewis, Al Green, Elvis Presley, the Staple Singers, Jimi Hendrix, and B.B. King, I can tell you that this Amazing Lady graduated from the old school of Blues/Rock. If you love Blues and Rock, you simply must add this CD to your collection. You'll find yourself listening to it over and over!

Hey it's great that jamie aebersold included this title in the series. But, hey, it's difficult stuff. I have been working through the JA material for a few years, I'm getting to be quite a good straight-ahead jazz player, but the concepts in the Brecker Brothers material are really out there. Why? unlike regular jazz materials, there are few indentifiable - to me, anyway - cadences, turnarounds, passages, scales....its all polychords, like one chord over another, and very tight fusion rythms. It's fantastic material but you gotta be on the wavelength and it takes some doing....If you're an advanced fusion artist, you could rip through it, but otherwise...be prepared to put in some serious hours.....

OK, so I bought this CD based on the reviews and all I can say is WHERE HAS MARLON BEEN ALL THIS TIME! This is a great CD folks! If you're into REAL soul music, look no further than "Enter My Mind". Marlon is a great singer/songwriter. Very much of the Curtis/Marvin vibe. The songs take me back to when I was growing up in the '70's, where music had much more substance than it does today. I'm VERY happy I bought this CD and you will too (especially if you love REAL SOUL MUSIC)!

Saunders is best known as a founding member of the acid jazz combo Jazzhole. Though his songwriting is featured prominently in the group context, his vocals typically only adorn a few tracks. On this first solo album his singing is pushed to the fore to match his songwriting contributions. The result is surprisingly old-school, given that fellow Jazzhole founder Warren Rosenstein produced over half the album's tracks (Shawn V. Lucas filled the chair for the rest). The backings are sophisticated, but smooth and melow, without the aural explorations or jamming passages of Jazzhole. This keeps the focus on Saunders and his lyrics - right where it should be for a solo album. A fine record for playing with the lights low.

I see I am not the only person here with the same problem. I have been to a couple online stores and heard praise of this guy but there were never any tracks to be sampled. So I actually came across the album in the store one day in the city and decided to give it a shot.....well......it was a FAR shot.

Though I would hate to say to not believe what you read because I would simply love for you to believe me when I say...DON'T GET TOO EXCITED OVER THIS GUY.

I see now-a-days no matter how bad the singer may be, if they bring something to the music scene that is reminiscent of the old days, people want to praise it because "it is different from all the contemporary stuff you hear today". BUT, just because he brings back the old style by NO MEANS makes this man any better.

You can check out some samples on the official website marlonsaunders.com--which I should have done to start with. See for yourself. Save a few pennies.

I am an avid music lover who doesn't mind taking risks when it comes to purchasing music from an artist i've never heard of even if i haven't previewed the album. At the expense of good money, you win some, you lose some. After reading the positive reviews concerning this album i was pretty anxious to give it a listen. BIG MISTAKE. This album is complete garbage. The only reson i gave it 2 stars is because on a couple of the tracks i dug the lyrics. But, as a whole the album is crap. This brother has a lack of control over his voice, bad pitch, and attempts to impress with poorly executed and mostly failed vocal acrobatics. It pained me to force myself to listen to a complete track without skipping to the next song. Nothing about his style is catchy nor is it unique. Not to say that catchy is good (i prefer more unique artists) but this cat couldn't even pull off a catchy hook. In too many songs he *ATTEMPTED* a flavor similar to Maxwell and sounded so bad he actually hurt my feelings. People, there is a reason why the songs on this album cannot be previewed, for if they were you surely would not purchase this cd. So, as a forewarning to all lovers of genuinely good music...stay far far away from this album, for my copy rests in the trash at this very moment.
