The Isley Brothers makes a very strong comeback on "Between The Sheets" after putting out rather lackluster albums in the early 80's. Sadly, this album is the swan song to the 3+3 run of albums by the Isley's with the group splitting into due to creative differences. "Choosey Lover" puts you in the mind of previous love ballads from the 70's, while the title track brings the Isley's into a different, yet Isley Brothers trademark sound. Had these guys not split, there might have been another solid 4 or 5 more albums by this group.

The end of an era, but they went out with a bang

"Between the Sheets" was a fitting comeback for the 3+3 model of The Isley Brothers after three rather lackluster albums ("Grand Slam," "Inside You" and "The Real Deal"). Unfortunately, it was also the last album of the legendary, two-generation group; Ernie and Marvin Isley plus Chris Jasper would leave by the end of 1983 and form their own group, Isley/Jasper/Isley.

IMO, this was a tremendous half of an album -- the ballads. Generally a group that typically had two ballads per album, The Isley Brothers realized its uptempo stuff had become an anachorism. Apparently inspired by the sounds of Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" (which was released months before this album), the guys came back with several killer ballads ("Between the Sheets," "Choosey Lover," "Touch Me" and "I Need Your Body") and the bouncy mid-tempo "Let's Make Love Tonight."

For the first time in several years, The Isley Brothers sound inspired. Ronald Isley's vocals are vibrant and the songwriting is particularly strong on the aforementioned tracks. Moreover, the music production is lush and elaborate without sounding as forced as it was on the "Inside You" album. Ernie Isley's work as a drummer and percussionist are more of the forefront than his guitar playing (save for "Choosey Lover").

Unlike some others, I never got into the other more uptempo tracks, such as "Ballad of the Fallen Soldier" and "Slow Down Children" that showed how dated their other sound had gotten. The success of "Between the Sheets" paved the way for the act's reputation as bedroom balladeers for the next 25 years.

What Can I Say? It's a Classic!

The Isley Brothers hae been putting out quality, classic material for several decades, and this album, which came out in 1983 is still on hit today! Of course, there is the silky smooth R&B classic, "Between The Sheets" that rapper/producers like Jermaine Dupri sampled on Da Brat's "FunkDaFied," and like Sean "Puffy" Combs did on Biggie's "Big Poppa." But this album is more than just the title cut. There is a nice mixture of styles, like the fast paced party funk tracks like "Way Out Love" and "Rock You Good" make you want to dance or lowride with the top down. There are other silky tracks here as well, like the slow tempo "Choosy Lover" and "Touch Me." The Isley's vocals are among the best of R&B past and present, and they showcast them extremely well through the album! The mid-tempo track "I Need Your Body," is smooth and fun to just chill to! Overall, the album is just pure acoustic and lyrical fun (feel good music!). This music is also a good romantic mood setter to play when on a date!

After releasing some lackluster albums in the early 80's (The Real Deal, Inside You and Grand Slam) the Isleys came back with this, their last #1 R&B Album for 18 years. The best thing about this album is that everyone in the group is front and center. Rudolph's and O'Kelly's backing vocals are the best they've ever been. Too often in the previous albums they would be drowned out by the burning funk cooked up by the younger 3. This is a nice change as the Isleys once again sounded like a vocal group while still being a band. The first side is all love songs. "Choosey Lover" and "I Need Your Body" are the best of the bunch, the latter just being just short of perfection as Ronald provides stellar lead vocals, Chris goes into Barry White mode as he does a little "rap" at the end, Ernie's guitar and the backing vocals convey the urgency of the song and Marvin's bass keeps rumbling along as usual. But the second side is filled with killer funk and protest songs. "Slow Down Children" and "Ballad For The Fallen Soldier" burn with as much anger as "Fight The Power", "The Pride" and "Livin' In The Life". They cap things off with the rockin' instrumental "Rock You Good".

This album was the most cohesive the Isleys put out in their 3+3 era. It seemed they had finally recaptured their sound and updated it for the 80's. Too bad this was to be their swan song as the younger 3 bolted to form Isely Jasper Isley. This album only makes you wonder what could have been.

My favorite Isley Brothers album

This album is a true classic. I don't even know where to start. I was turned on to this LP after hearing Notorious BIG's "Big Poppa", which sampled the title track "Between the Sheets". Since "Between the Sheets" was great I decided to get the whole album. I was amazed.

Between the Sheets is the perfect title for this music because it's most convinient when you're in the mood to get "Between the Sheets". Though every track on this album is great, my favorites have to be "Choosey Lover", "I Need Your Body", and "Ballad For the Fallen Soldier". Those are the ones I play most often. Great production along with great vocals by lead vocalist Ron Isley make this album a masterpiece. If you're a hip-hop fan like myself then you'll find that many artists have used samples from this album. Nas used "Choosey Lover" for his "Street Dreams Remix", Jay-Z & Too Short used "Ballad For the Fallen Soldier" for "A Week Ago", and of course BIG used "Between the Sheets" for "Big Poppa". The latter of those was more along the lines of copying/biting rather than actual sampling. I blame that on Puffy.

I recommend you purchase this album as soon as possible. $9.98 is an excellent price for an album this good. It's easily worth 5 times that much. This, in my opinion is the Isley Brothers greatest work. You'll enjoy this much more than one of their collection albums.

All of the Isleys early work without the younger Isleys is just as good with them. But these early workouts are more raw-stripped down and pop-oriented. Ron Isley has a way of making country, and rock remakes sound like they were never before recorded. Not too many black artists can do that. To get a taste of the "Real Isleys" before the "Mr. Biggs" persona, get this with "Get into something", and "Givin' it back"

Gotta love it!

This album was a change of pace from all of the other soul albums of that day (heavier emphasis on lead guitar, covers of songs made famous by pop and country artists). It is awesome, especially their remake of "It's Too Late." A must for any true Isleys fan!

A completely good listen from beginning to end. The remakes of "Put a Little love in You Heart" and the title cut are pleasantly moving, as well as "Lay Away" and the better known "Work To Do" (this original version beats the Vanessa Williams remake by a mile)! An unknown classic is the haunting conclusion "Love Put Me on The Corner" which I defy anyone to listen to just once!

BROTHER BROTHER BROTHER is an album in which the Isleys soon-to-be platinum 3+3 formula really gels. Ernie, Marvin & Chris made appearances on previous T-Neck albums, but their talents were used to recycle way too many "It's Your Thing" riffs. This album blends the right amount of covers (the title track, "Sweet Season") and great original material ("Work To Do", "Layaway"). The 10 1/2 minute bluesy take on Carole King's "It's Too Late" is lively due to Ronald's soaring vocals and Ernie's wailing guitar. And the beautiful closer "Love Put Me On The Corner" is perhaps the first great original Isley ballad, and a huge improvement over the insipid ballads on the GET INTO SOMETHING album. BROTHER BROTHER BROTHER gave the Isley Brothers the sound that was used in full effect on their breakthrough album 3+3.

This CD is a good addition to your 70s Soul collection if you also like The O'Jays, Spinners, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Isley Brothers and/or The Main Ingredient, Four Tops, The Dramatics and any other of those wonderful Soul bands that ruled the "classic" Philly and Motown sound.

I was only 7 years old in 1972 when CB&SR were in their short lived hey-day. But even at 7 years old the sounds of R&B and Edward's voice was the icing on the cake for my love for great soul music along with Stevie Wonder, The O-jays and many more. Having this CD in my collection now not only brings back great memories but makes me appreciate the soulful sound and great lyrics written by the Cornelious Brothers. I only wish they were still going. I recamend getting this collection it is truly a great album and edwards voice is one of a kind even for a 7 year old kid in 1972.

Well, how d'you put that one? Say, in 1984 or so, following a friend's advice I checked the (never heard before) Brecker brothers, the only one they carried in store was "Detente" so I bought it; well next thing I remember is being P... off by the disco-funk beat which I hated, but after some 30 seconds when the first chorus went off, had realized that it was my best record ever. Well what they do is, take any style and burst it from the inside, into jazz frenzy. My masters ever since, btw I used to play trumpet and my bro is still a pro at saxophone, he learned a great deal from them crazy brothers.
You can blindly go for it, quality 360° scope.

The Isley Brothers are timeless. Their music is enjoyable to every generation. To come all these years and have devoted fans is not luck, it's talent.

Ronald Isley a. k. a. Mr. Biggs is just a Kool Kat. His songs are about relationships of today but portrayed in a tasterful way. He is not ashamed to admit that men get played too and he does this well with the help of my boy R. Kelly.

All the tracks on this album are a treat to listen too. I find myself repeating most of them. This album should be in anyone's collection that enjoys R & B.

Later.....

Look, I love the Isley Brothers; I grew up with 'em, an' I respect them for bringin' new meaning to the term longevity, so for that reason there ain't much bad I can say 'bout this album. I love Ron Isley's voice an' I love smoothed-out R&B, nice hooks, atmospheric an' romantic background music an' this album has ALL of those things. So why is this not an essential album to me? Simple. These lyrics, while charming, sound like they comin' from a young, thuggish R&B loverboy, NOT a mature, elder statesman who knows the game well. I do like the groove on 'Warm Summer Night' an' there are some even more solid songs on the set like the funky, guitar-fueled opener 'Move Your Body' an' the hypnotically soulful 'You Didn't See Me', both produced by the mos' underrated talent in R&B Raphael Saadiq, an' there are some hidden gems throughout like the monumental title track which owes the mos' to their classic '70s ballads, but overall there's jus' not enough of that real, raw emotive grown-folks' music I was in search of.

Maybe Ron is tryin'ta relive his youth with this Mr. Biggs persona, maybe R. Kelly (who, don't get me wrong, I love as a singer) HAS in some ways corrupted them, an' then again maybe I jus' don't get it, but this style jus' don't work for me when it comes to the Isleys' music. I'll admit I like the bluesy flow of 'Contagious', an' I'm a sucker for this whole cinematic 'Down Low' drama that Ron an' Kelly have been playin' out in song for the past few years, but they shoulda stayed on the musical path they were on from their '97 disc 'Mission to Please'. THAT was grown-folks' music, an' THAS' what I'm lookin' for in them; I need my game to be backed up with some serious, uninhibited, classy romantic RELATIONSHIP music, not a cartoon character named Mr. Biggs feedin' his ego an' his appetite for sex.

This album is the main reason, I'm hesitant about pickin' up their most recent album 'Body Kiss', 'cause from what I've heard is' all that this is an' more (or less dependin' on how you look at it), so I guess if you gave this five stars, then you can't go wrong with it. But, me personally, I'm'a stick with their more substantial older stuff.

Simply the best (Sorry Tina)!

I've been a huge fan of the Isleys for over 30 years, and stuck by them through the early Motown soul and their golden groove-funk period of the 1970s, through to the later stuff right up to the excellent Mission To Please album. But that's when they should have dumped R. Kelly, because it's the last album that had any really decent hook to it. And when you have a blistering guitarist like Ernie Isley, why bury him so far in the mix that his licks sound like they're being played through cotton wool?

R. Kelly's plodding grooves just grind from one indistinguishable track to another, which is pretty much the case on the even more disappointing follow-up to this, Body Kiss. The only track that kicks any ass here is the opener, Move Your Body, which fools you into thinking this might be a return to former glories for our heroes. Sadly, the leaden funk of R. Kelly then comes crashing in like a tidal wave of sludge and we get a whole turgid mess of leaden walking-pace 'grooves' that might sound all right in the background when you're getting it on with the partner of your dreams, but as listening music just gets you all exasperated and reaching for the 3+3 album again.

Come on, Isleys, dump the Kelly glop and get back to what you can do best!

For the song "Coolin Me Out" alone worth having along with other great songs. And speaking of "Coolin Me Out" why haven't Sony release the Showdown album on cd yet. That was a great album back in 1978 and still rocks today. They release all the Isley Brothers 1970's stuff on cd at one time or another (even "Winner Takes All") which was also a great album. But overall this is great compilation of some of their great funk jams which many people tend to forget. Also love the song "Who Loves You Better". Isley's Brothers Forever!!

you better bet i'm feeling good when i write about these wonderful brothers from cincinnati, ohio. this is one of the best comps out there dealing with funk this damn phat! the lead-off track, "showdown" proves this. to me, marvin isley is one of the most underrated bass players of all time. not that there ain't any other bass men out there, but marvin's bass playing has a style of its own. just listen to the bass pops on tracks like "i wanna be with you", "take me to the next phase", "the pride", and "tell me "when you need it again". high, phat, and funky is all it is. and let's not forget ernie isley's scorching solos on his fender strat! damn, this mother can jamm! his solos on "liquid love", "hope you feel better love", "who loves you better", and "climbing up the ladder" just blow the speakers out! in other words, all 14 songs kick major glass, and i'm not talkin' about the plastic kind, either.

When I was seven,"The Heat Is On" was out.People also call that the baby maker LP because of side two. That side overshadowed the first side, the funky and you know it side. Two of the three songs from the funky side are on this collection. You add three songs from the "Go For Your Guns" LP,five of the eight songs on "Showdown" (!),one song from "Harvest For The World" and two from "Winner Takes All" and you have one helluva disc! Pure, uncut funk.Kids think they have an inkling but sadly, this generation dosen't have a clue.

I'm on the case. I bought this anthology about 3 years ago and I still am amazed at how underrated the Isleys upbeat funk is. They are much heavier than the Commodores or the Gap Band and Ron Isley has one of the most distinctive voices in black music history, but it is the ensemble palying that makes this joint the sho shot. Check out the guitars on Climbin up the Ladder, or the lewd and nasty bass and keys on Liquid Love. Everyone always talks about their slow jams and they are spectacular but the fact that this is a basically a rock band probably started to turn many radio DJs away from them towards the end of the 70s. Rediscover one of America's best bands.

Never a weak track, this baby funks all the way. High energy funk throughout with the guitar effects the Isley Brothers were fameous for in the 1970's. You listen to this and say to yourself, why don't I listen to this more often? It doesn't have the Top 40 hit tracks of some of their other CD's but it has the most consistently powerful music all the way throught. You will groove on this.

If your kids come up to you and ask, "Dad, what is funk?" reach for this CD first. No words can explain it, but this music will.

Living during that time of The Vietnam War protest, The Civil Right movement, Women's Liberation movement was so heady and intoxicating. I was in the Marines and did not know if I was going to war so I lived for the moment. This album reflected the times and I identified with it. I nearly worn the groove of this album. I have always wanted to own it again after it was stolen. Now I have the chance to not only own it but to hear it in a way the vinyl records could not bring out.

Their prolonged workout on "Shout" (1959) cemented the path from Gospel to Soul. And their cover of "Twist And Shout" from 1962 was both funky and cool and inspired The Beatles' OWN cover version. The brothers'
(O'Kelly, Rudolph, and Ronald) search for fame, fortune, and independence led them to Motown Records in the mid-sixties. While they were only a second-line act there, The Isleys learned a lot about the workings of a Black-owned record label. They also recorded another classic, "This Old Heart Of Mine." Toward the end of the sixties, they launched their own label, T-Neck, with the smash hit "It's Your Thing." The album that followed, The Brothers Isley, neatly closed the book on the group's soul years. With the 1970 release, Get Into Something, the brothers ditched their suits in favor of "hip" new clothes, and their new music showed the influence of Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix. Now they were ready to CHANGE history. Joining the group for this new phase were younger brothers Ernie (guitars), and Marvin (bass) and brother-in-law Chris Jasper (keyboards). Giving It Back was the next step in the group's evolution. The guys had established a fresh new sound, for a new decade. Now they would use this new approach to tackle songs (and issues) that White kids were listening to and concerned with. "Ohio/Machine Gun" was a biting commentary on the tragic riot at Kent State University. The drums alternate between a military cadence and rapid-fire drumrolls that simulated gunfire. Add in the incendiary guitar work of Hendrix disciple Ernie, and you had a song that sounded like it was recorded on the front lines of a war zone! On "Fire and Rain" and "Lay, Lady, Lay" they showed their understanding that the changing times were having a devastating effect on people and their relationships. They latch on to "Thought I'd See You/Thought I'd See You Again" on "Fire And Rain" and keep this statement of confusion in the forefront. The cover of "Spill The Wine" illustrated how in touch The Isleys were with other musicians on the cutting edge. Eric Burdon (of Animals fame) had a hit with the song fronting the band War, another Sly-influenced act that was the first successful Black band to reflect the saturation of British Invasion acts in American rock music. The Isleys' version "gives this song back" to Black listeners (and thus inspired the name of the album). The closing number, a cover of Stephen Stills' post-Woodstock classic, "Love The One You're With," puts the brothers right back in the church, where they are clearly celebrating their ability to take these songs and make them their own. The Isley Brothers would no longer be a vocal group, but a self-contained musical unit that was grounded in the foundation of more than a decade of paying dues on the Chitlin' Circuit, and of the profound musicality of the younger members. One more album (Brother, Brother, Brother) would complete this second era in Isleys history. That album was so full of hits ("Pop That Thing" "Work To Do" "Lay-Away" and a testifying take on Carole King's "It's Too Late" that would have fit in nicely on Giving It Back), that when The Isleys shopped for a new marketing deal for their label, CBS opened up the check book. "Who's That Lady" followed, and by then all six members of The Isley Brothers were pictured on the cover of the new album, 3+3. They were a band now. They had arrived. Giving It Back was in important step in that journey and, in retrospect, a turning point in the career of the Isley Brothers.

Not being able to listen to this cd before buying it, i was forced to judge a book by its cover. Just seeing an album cover photo of three bruthas holding acoustic guitars made me incredibly curious as to what this cd was all about. A kind of MTV unplugged 20 years before MTV did it??? Unfortunately no. The only tune I would say is something special on this album is the funkafied, Jackson 5 ABC-esque, version of 'Love the One You're With'. Otherwise, the other songs are nothing that unique (or acoustic for that matter).

Luther Vandross' amazing cover of Stephen Stills' Love The One You're With(from the Songs album) was inspired by The Isley Brothers classic reinterpretation.Even before "Lutha" recorded a covers album,Giving It Back was the brothers re-interpreting songs associated with rock musicians, and turning them into R&B classics.
Their melding of Crosby,Stills,Nash, and Young's Ohio and the Isley's former sideman Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun is nothing short of amazing as well as their observation to the times. The sensuous treatment of Lay,Lady Lay is a far cry from Dylan's contrified original, and where Eric Burden spoke the words to Spill The Wine,Ronald Isley sings it in his signature tenor, transforming it into an altogether new song.He also nails the deep sadness that James Taylor's Fire and Rain brings to listeners.
If this album has any flaws,is that it took too long to be reissued, thus nearly burying this creative phase of the Isley Brothers music.Where most would pick 3+3 or The Heat Is On as classic studio recordings,Givin' It Back and Brother,Brother,Brother are just as essential.

This Isley's album is a pure funky classic gem. Every song on this cd is just about slammin'. I still love "Voyage to Atlantis". It's one timeless classic. This is a must have in your Isley's collection. Heck, it's a must have in a r&b collection period.

I was a junior in high school when this came out and popular music was becoming increasingly segregated terrain. Post Elvis rock and roll was about White men (save Heart, Joni Mitchell & a lead singers like Stevie Nicks, Chistie Hynde & Blondie) and their guitars. So the appropriation of race music into the "classic" rock and roll we recognize today meant the Isleys, Athur Lee & Love, Mother's Finest, Funkadelic & even Earth Wind & Fire...all rock bands with soul, must become "Black music" or R & B forever ghettoized and inaccessible to most teens (radio play was everything back then). THIS ALBUM is one of the greatest of the 1970s, possibly top 25, the equal to anything put out by Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, and as easy to connect with as a Steve Miller album. Read the comments below and then buy it, it is perfect and you will see why we owe a great debt to the Isleys for their contribution to American rock & roll. If not for the informal "White Men Only" rule, you might have heard them along side the Eagles on your favorite AOR format back in the day, but thank goodness you can still buy this classic here to enjoy today!

There's just nobody else like them. Distinct sound, real true musical ground breakers who have stood the test of time and are still going strong! Thoroughly enjoying listening to this project. These cuts bring back good memories of a time that has since passed, but the "high" of just having a good time remains with each song you listen to from this project.

Received it during the timeframe indicated with no damage done to it during transport. Enjoyed purchasing with Amazon for it is truly hassle free. Will continue to do business with Amazon in the future.

Thanks

A Bounty Of Soul For All Souls!

Of the many stellar albums the Isley Brothers put out during their 3+3 era (1973 to 1984), Harvest For The World, in my opinion, is a slightly deeper album. Sure, it packs just as much soul power & passion as the I.B. albums that came before or after it, but on this one, I think the Isleys were reaching for something more - and achieved it.

The album opens with the "Harvest For The World Prelude" - a slower, more expressive version of the album's theme with Ron Isley vocalizing pleas for healing, to "Gather every man & woman...Give thanks for your children." This is soul from the soul.

Both the title track & "People Of Today" speak out about the social fustrations of the early 70's - Watergate, Poverty, Racism, Nixon, Unemployment - many of the same issues we face today, but above all, they express the need for healing - the "Harvest".

"Who Loves You Better" is a fuzz-guitar/clavinet funkfest with Chris Jasper doing some Stevie Wonder-ish clavinet work and Ernie Isley churning out one of his trademark extended a-la-Hendrix guitar solos.

Next, you get 2(of the many)classic Isley slow jams - "(At Your Best) You Are Love" & "Let Me Down Easy". "At Your Best..." remains a staple of quiet storm radio and was beautifully covered by Aaliyah(R.I.P.).

The album closes with the funk/rock of "So You Wanna Stay Down" & "You Still Feel the Need".

With "Harvest For The World", you get the Pride & Passion the Isley Brothers are famous for...and a little bit more.

A very socially conscious Isley's album!

This is more of a Fight the Power pt. 2 album. The Isley's basically touched up on the greedy politicians and just wealthy people in general who have it all and not enough being spreaded around for everyone else to prosper in the world. The title pretty much speaks for itself. Ronald and his brothers were on point on this one. Another great Isley's classic.
