I got this album because Amazon has it listed as having early Frank Sinatra on it. They are wrong. If you want Frank Sinatra
do NOT buy this album.
This is a nice collection of popular tunes from 1935. Some are pure instrumental, some with a female vocalist, some with a male.

this is a killer CD - there are a lot of cuts on here that I had not previously heard. If you love his stuff from the 30's,
you've just got to add this one to your collection!

Disastrous Acoustics!

You'll wish you could have been there when they recorded these sessions.... Not so much because of the potent troupe of swing-era
greats that formed Ray Noble's American orchestra (all my favorites: Glen Miller, Will Bradley, Claude Thornhill and Charlie
Spivak) or the music they produced, but because YOU COULD HAVE ACTUALLY HEARD IT! It literally sounds as if the session took
place in a long, narrow room outfitted with one microphone. The disastrous acoustics frustrate what was probably an all-time
great performance. Of all the Big Band CDs I bought, this one had the greatest promise, but it was a promise unfulfilled.
Still, the sidemen and the tunes deserve at least a two-star rating. What I wouldn't give for clear recordings of even half
the 19 tracks!
Ray Noble's great all-star American ochestra in hi-fi!

Here are rare radio transcriptions of Ray Noble's American Band. The band that Glenn Miller put together for Ray's engagement
at the swanky new Rainbow Room "36 stories to the stars", on top of Rockefeller Center in New York. Al Bowlly is on hand
to sing and his way of crooning is a perfect compliment to the band's arrangements. Since these were transcriptions intended
for radio only, the sound is truly wonderful. Especially for 1936. By the way, Glenn Miller's fine arrangements (especially
the ballads) give the listener a taste of what was to come with Miller's own band. Get this CD!

It's repeatedly mentioned that the Duke had a creative pause between his early successes in the late twenties and the early
forties recordings. That's simply nonsense. On this disc you hear the proof: Duke and his men are playing together as one.
In my opinion, the highlights of this CD are the titles "Cotton" and "Truckin".The former portrays the South wonderfully
and unpretentiously in a common song context.Ivie Anderson's vocal is warm and perfect. The latter is a killer diller. On
both tracks (and "Accent on Youth")you can hear Big Ben playing with the"Guv'nor"for the first time.I advise you to program
your CD-player and listen to "Merry-Go-Round" ten times. It's one of the best Ellington tonal portraits ever, the same is
true with "Showboat Shuffle". "Reminiscing in Tempo"(dedicated to his late mother)is the first jazz composition to span
four 78rpm sides, now comfortably enjoyable on the CD-format. I'm a proud owner of the complete output of the
Classics-series,but this is one of the most rewarding.
