I bought this album because I had heard about Jack Purvis, who was supposed to be a great trumpet player, but at the same
time had a reputation of being a flamboyant party goer and all around "wild man." This set has some great performers like
Lee Morse, and the Boswell Sisters. What the compilers did was to find examples of Purvis' playing on records issued between
1928 and 1935. A lot of these tunes are period pieces which feature the typical vocal stylings of the times. I find the selections
thoroughly enjoyable! You may buy this set for the trumpet playing, but I find the tunes of the '30's are the real reason
to own this one. The booklet included is quite informative and well written.
